Fartnut, the Octave V70SE better be warm, because it is a TUBE integrated amp! Plus he has stock tubes, which IMHO are a bit on the "bright" end of the spectrum.
It was definitely warm compared to the Emos, and after seeing a FR chart of the Octave into a sample speaker load, it makes sense that it'd be warm. Slipping me where I found it now. And I didn't have the stock tubes, had the KT88s. But if you say that they were the stock KT88s, ok, I guess.

Thanks JJ! I have some amp stands on the way that will get them off the floor and allow me to offset the amps a little more so they don't block as much of the tv stand. I'm hoping that it really brings everything together with them in place, but even on the floor, it still looks cool to me.

That's right! You did have the Gold Lion KT88s. With all the tube rolling I have done, I have noticed that the biggest determining factor in the sound is the Input tube, in your case it would be that 12ax7 tube; and the one in the V70 SE was stock.

And yeah, where did you see that chart?

It was in this month's stereophile for the RE290. Not the same amp, but imagine they behave similarly. The midrange has a good boost and the top end is rolled off.

I had gold lions in my Cary amp with the 3.4s. It was warm but I enjoyed that combo a lot. The v70 I had the stock ones. Sound was quite neutral with the Sapphires.

First of all, Don't roll the tubes, YET. Get used to the sound of the unit. Besides, tubes need to settle in and do require some burn in time of 100hrs or so depending on the type of tube. This way, you'll have a basis or "reference" on the sonic fingerprint your pre amp.

Secondly, tell me what kind(make and model)of tubes your pre-amp has and we'll take it from there.

Do what Rhett said. Listen to it for a while and get used to it. If you like, don't tube roll; if you want to tweak it, then you can tube roll till you're content. Rhett's probably tried every tube ever made at this point, so just hit him up.

Nice amp stands Alex! I have the same ones but a different color.

Still have the same impressions of the Emo's?

I thought my monos were big, those XPR's are huge! I've often thought of trying something different that's not quite so large but don't want to give up the power and control the XPA-1's have on my speakers.

Thanks! Yep, still loving the Emos and have the same thoughts. They really are massive amps, but now that I have them I don't think I could go to something smaller for the same reason. That and they're just physically impressive...

Thanks, and yeah the pictures don't do them justice for just how large they really are.
