I have no concrete info, but this is typical of France (other European Countries as well) to sometimes get US releases a few months later than we do.

Studios set release dates and in Europe they are usually more delayed that NA and sometimes its just the opposite.

Does anyone know for sure if this will be region free? It looks like some M6 titles are region free, but I don't know if that's the case with all of them.

What am I missing? If I put it in my cart and go through the checkout at amazon France directly, it's EUR 29.39, which is a little less than $40 with today's exchange rate. So, what's the benefit of the group buy?

Yes @ that price its cheaper to do it yourself. however the idea is "bulk is better" and without exact number of participants, its tough to get an exact cost.

using current exchange rate (*1.31)
10 copies is €230.90 or €23.09 each $30.24usd
5 copies is €118.95 or €23.79 each $31.16usd
1 copy is €29.39 $38.51usd

so bulk is better but you have to reship it so it eliminates all that with shipping and fees and you are back to what it costs to get one.

Where do you get the 29.39 from and where do you get the 23.09 from?
The price per steelbook doesn't decrease if I put 10 steelbooks in my basket... ?

You're missing the "without shipping", the cost of getting it to you. For you in the Netherlands it's not too expensive - 6 euro per shipment with no cost per item for standard shipping. But it is expensive to the US & Canada:

Rapide (standard, 10 to 12 days) EUR 9,00 per order + EUR 1,90 per item
Éclair (Express, 2 to 4 days) EUR 20,00 per order, 0 per item, + 4 per kilo

So, for someone in the US or Canada to place an individual order for 1 copy it will cost them 29.39 euro, around US$39 - 24,99 for Steelbook + 9 euro shipping per order + 1,90 euro shipping per item - minus removal of VAT - for shipments outside the EU we get VAT (Value Added Tax) removed. Where group buys come in useful is with the express shipping with a flat rate of 20 euro per order + 4 euro per kilo. There's some savings in group buys with standard shipping, but express is a much better deal for large purchases, and is much safer for Steelbooks - standard shipping is DHL Global Mail to the US or Canada, and then delivery by the postal service, lots of chances for it to get banged up. But that is where jw is getting the 29.39 and 23.09 from, the cost per copy shipped to the US, minus VAT removal. And as he points out, in group buys it costs the coordinator $3-5 per copy to re-ship it to the purchaser. And if the order value is more than US$200, the coordinator will get hit with import duty taxes.

If you have the money, it looks like the BEST idea is to use the French lenticular cover on the Canadian steel - then you would have awesome front, back, and inside artwork, and in my opinion - the BEST version. Wish I was rich...
