I lived with the YPAO sub calibration for the last 10 months or so (not that it was bad) until I finally decided to take advantage of the PEQ and calibrate it myself a couple of days ago. Holy crap what a difference! I managed to eliminate the boominess while still having earth/wall/couch shaking bass in my room. I am running the sub a bit hot (just for HT, separate tuning for music), but before if I ran it hot with the YPAO calibration it was way too boomy for my taste so I had to turn the sub level down which unfortunately the overall output suffered. Now I don't want to leave the HT room lol.
Ha, ha! In my case is the other way around. I ran an Onkyo with Audyssey for years and I just switch to my first Yamaha like a year ago. I knew about the limitations on the bass mgmt. on the Yammy way too late. But, the price was too good to pass. In any case, I'm currently using a Velodyne SMS-1 to EQ my subs and I'm happy with the results.

However, I'm interested on the way that you calibrated your system using PEQ. Could you please provide further details?

Default Adding Emotiva Poweramp to Yamaha B&W 5.1 setup

Hello,

I have a Yamaha RXV2700 receiver (Claimed 7.1 channels delivering 140 Watts into each full channel at .04% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion).

B&W 704s as front, B&W HTM7 center, B & W DS1 rears, and B&W AWS 700 subwoofer.

I am considering adding a 3 channel or a five channel power amp and am looking at the Emotiva XPA-3 or Emotiva XPA-5 power amp or even an Emotiva UPA-700 rated at 80 W per channel.

Any thoughts on the likelihood that I will get better audio performance?

I have always been a lazy receiver user - this is my first foray into power amps.

I think you would certainly benefit from an XPA-3 or XPA-5.

The 2xxx/3xxx models have a 7 band EQ for the sub that allows for manual tweaking which is what I used (although YPAO will also EQ the sub on the 2xxx/3xxx models). The cool thing is that each band isn't fixed, and it also allows you to select the depth of each frequency, not just amplitude.

Thanks for the info Red! That is the part that I'm missing in my receiver. So, the only good thing is that the lack of EQ on the receiver is compensated by the SMS-1 hooked to my system.

Cheers!

Good ear. Yeah, it's their new album. One of my favorite songs off of it called 'Day Four'.

As for the sound, in person the bass is much more present and overall just a better presentation, but I still think it sounded pretty nice in the video.

Now that I am using two amps (XPA-3 and UPA-7), do I need to adjust anything to get the most out of them?

Hello,

I've noticed that you started the official Emotiva Q&A thread. I was wondering if I could bounce a question off of you. I currently have a yamaha 7.1 receiver that is 130 watts per channel. I've researched on Emotiva's website some and would like to try adding some power amps. I'm thinking I'd need a 5 channel and a 2 channel from what they have available. I'm wondering how all the connections would be made between the receiver(if it can even still be utilized) and the speakers. Do you have any advice? Something I may not be thinking of?
Thanks for your time
Josh

Your receiver must have "Pre-Out" terminals. You connect the "Pre-Out" terminals to the Emotiva Amp "Line-In" terminals with RCA patch cords for each channel. The speakers are connected to the Emotiva Amps with speaker wire. If your receiver has a 12-V trigger output you can connect that to the amps for auto ON & OFF control.
