United (Continental) Mileage Plus Awards - Cool Redemption options

I used to fly continental (now United) at least a couple times a year and accrued a decent amount of miles, but really haven't flown much in the last couple of years. In addition, my electric company gives 1 united/continental mile for each dollar I spend on my bill and so far these miles had just been sitting in my account. While checking on something else, I noticed they were set to expire at the end of this year and so I explored the available redemption options.

Instead of upgrades and tickets (for which they charge way to many points in my opinion), I noticed United also has an online shop available where you can redeem your points for merchandise. I clicked around in that shop and was impressed with the items you can get, as well the value of the points. Generally speaking it various of course, but the points on various items worked out to 100 miles per dollar.

I picked up two Harmony One Touch remotes (which vary in price between $210 - $250) for 25,000 miles each. They also have Monster Power Centers, Home Theater systems etc. etc.

I know this is not a good deal for everone; but I wished I would have known about this earlier so I figured to share here.

In any case, I got two Harmony One Touch remotes coming to me for miles that would have otherwise expired soon.

Thanks Green, same boat as you, my miles expiring. For 21,500 almost expiring miles for a Harmony touch is a pretty good deal.
