I've always thought the "540p" thing was misleading, since it implies 960x540 resolution (since 1080p, 720p, etc. are measured at 16:9). And even worse when people say it's "nearly SD", which goes to show they're either lying or have no idea what they're talking about. Only the vertical resolution is cut, meaning it's actually 1920x540 per eye - a higher resolution than 720p. Although it's different for everyone, the human brain is also able to fill in some of the missing detail information from what's presented in each eye's view.
I have an active and a passive set and I like them both for different reasons. The passive set is easier to use and has less ghosting, but even though I don't notice any real loss of perceptible detail, I do sometimes see aliasing "jaggies" on high-contrast edges, especially diagonal ones, and text. The active set never has these jaggies and is theoretically sharper (not that I can really tell under normal viewing conditions), but the glasses are heavier, darker, and more annoying to use - not to mention more expensive. There's also more ghosting, at least on mine (though from what I've heard this seems to be true in general) and occasionally visible flickering from the glasses. If you've decided for sure you want a passive TV, then you still need to consider the price, the picture quality outside of 3D, and of course the features - do you want 2D-3D conversion? Smart apps? Motion smoothing? Etc etc. |

Good point it is definitely not SD but it was a shock going from an active plasma for 9 days to a passive. Returned that and got another active. Also active glasses are not expensive in all cases or heavy my Samsung glasses are lighter and more comfortable than the RealD glasses the theater give you. And less than $20.
Quick explanation of passive for anyone wondering, Every other horizontal line is used for the right eye and the opposite lines for the left eye. The film layer in the tv in conjunction with the glasses filter the left eye image from the right eye and vice versa. Active has an entire image for the right and left eye alternating between the two while sending a signal to the active glasses to shut off the right eye when the left screen is on and shutting off the right when the left is on. I have not seen any flickering by the way. Either way what will be important is the quality of the tv and its contrast ratio. Newer passive sets speed up the transfer of images to minimize the loss of detail.

Have both an active and Passive. Find the 3d in passive far superior to that in active. Just my opinion.

As others have said if one of your main reasons for going passive are the glasses go Samsung, their active glasses are super light and more comfortable than the ones they give you in the theater.
PS: The passive LG do look awesome I check them out at Bestbuy from time to time and for casual Living Room viewing it more than fits the bill. But for a dedicated Movie Room I would definitely go Active, to me they provide a more dense screen presentation. I know the eye can't notice those missing lines but the brain does.... :P |

I have decided I will be getting a passive 3D set for the family room (to replace the CRT TV we have now that my wife says she is "fine"'with, lol). Time for hi def, 3D, and blu-ray to be introduced to my wife, lol. She has no idea what she has been missing out on all these years, lol. That changes come Christmas. I know that is a while to wait....but I still want to live in the house, lol. Can't just buy this out of the blue and come home with it. Has to be a "introduced properly".....less bruising on my body that way, lol.

I have my active. Two of them as a matter of fact. Going passive for the family room because it will be easier for everyone to watch 3D flick with the cheap, lightweight glasses.

Picked up an LG 47LM7600 LED 3DTV about two weeks ago and really like it. I had originally purchased a Samsung UN46ES6500 and had to return it. I just wasn't impressed with the 3D or the black levels.
If you're planning on going passive, definitely look at an LG. |
