Question about Curved Projection Screens???

Hey guys...i have a question about curved projection screens??? I understand that they help with the pincushion effect when people use anamorphic lenses to get a 2.35.1 image. My real question is...do you need a curved screen when you buy a newer projector that does't need an external lense? Meaning using the 2.35.1 zoom feature on new projectors? Will you still get the pincushion effect??? Or is it the external lense that causes the pincushion effect? Anyone with knowledge in this area would be greatly appreciated....being that I'm about to get a new screen and projector for my theater!! Thanks guys!

It's the lens that causes the pincushion. I have used the zoom feature on both my projectors without issue. What projector and screen are you looking at getting?

Ok...but i can still get a curved screen right? It won't distort the image in anyway?

Im honestly not sure how the focus will be effected from the center to the edge.

The projector is actually the VPL-VW95ES...not the 90ES...but the picture is of the 90.
And the screen is Elite Lunette 2.35.1 Curved Fixed Screen 115" CineWhite

If you aren't going to get an a-lens then why do you want the curved screen?

Bill....they say along with helping with the pincushion effect...a curved screen also reflects more light back towards the viewer for a brighter image! So that's also a plus in my book!

I am not 100% sure, but I believe the lens shift on the Sony works like most projectors capable of displaying a 2.35:1 image, in that it actually will shoot the black bars above and below the screen so that the 2.35 image fills the screen completely. My Mitsubishi does it this way also, but the disadvantage from a performance standpoint is that you are losing resolution as the projector is still outputting information above and below the screen. The advantage of the anamorphic lens is that you get a full 1080p image in the 2.35:1 format....which is pretty damn cool. I have tried it both ways (I do not have a curved screen) in my setup and it was a no brainer to stick with the Panamorph lens as the image quality far outweighed any negative as I was able to almost completely eliminate any pincushion effect.

I must admit the cool factor of a curved screen is pretty high, but if performance is important, you might want to check out how the Sony shoots a 2.35:1 image.

But unless you are using an a-lens you wont have pincushion to deal with, all projectors use 16:9 panels as noted above. You would be better served getting a higher gain screen rather than a curved one.

Well....I just received my new 2.35.1 CURVED screen. WOW...I think it looks great...even if I ended up not really needing it according to other members...I must say that i like the way it looks so i'm happy I got it! I should be receiving my Sony VPL-VW95ES projector by the weekend! When I do...i'll post some new pictures. Thanks everyone who answered my questions...I really do appreciate it!

Congrats, pics? Do you still have the old projector up and shooting on it? I still think you are going to encounter focus issues from center to the edge based on the difference between distances to the lens, I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Bill....I'm still using my old projector but my new one gets delivered today!! Hopefully I'll get to post some new pics this weekend! If this makes sense they say that with a Curved screen...the image stays brighter AND clearer on the edges because the distance will be the same from the center of screen and edges of screen to the projector!! I did measure myself and my distances are 15'-3" to center of screen and 15'-3.5" to the edges now!! With my flat screen...the distances on the edges were 15'-6.5"!! Here's a diagram from the website to explain a little better!

Hey, I've been a little late to the party here. Very cool on the Lunette man, you don't see too many guys with them! I've been wanting to go scope and incorporate a curved screen and a-lens with my JVC when we move. Looking forward to the pics, I'm also really eager to hear your impressions on how difficult it was to assemble and the final results. I know you went with the Cinewhite but I hope someone on the forum, or someone over at AVS starts posting some pics and impressions of the new AcouticPro4K material, as I would love to build a false wall and put my speakers behind the thing when the day comes to pull the trigger.

Well.....I finished updating my theater this morning!! Here's my new 115" CURVED 2.35.1 Screen! My new Denon 3313CI Receiver....and my new Sony VPL-VW95ES 3D Projector!!! This is the first time i've updated my theater since I built it 5 years ago! So I'm stoked to watch some movies this weekend! Here's some pics since people were asking.

It looks really great, congratulations on the upgrades. I haven't seen that projector in person but I've heard it is fantastic. When I upgraded my projector after 5 years it was like watching my movies for the first time again it made that big of a difference, enjoy!

Thanks Roar!!! I agree...I feel like watching every movie that i've bought in the last 5 years again!! And that's a lot of movies!! I can't praise this projector enough!!
