Any blu-ray players with cinema zoom?

I used to hate OAR with bars but now it's grown on me so I don't care anymore.

However this isn't for me. My parents hate the black bars and want the entire 51" screen to be filled.

For some reason the Samsung Plasma I bought them last year doesn't have Cinema Zoom. It has a stretched zoom and that's about it. Since this TV doesn't have its own cinema zoom feature, I was wondering if there was a blu-ray player out there that would adjust/crop the picture for me?

I haven't purchased a blu-ray player in about 3-4 years, so I'm unfamiliar if any of the newer ones can do this.

Oppo 93 has a magnification feature, up to 2X, all in one remote button; however, many Blu-ray discs prohibit it's use! A few titles allow it: Casablanca (latest), Olive Films' titles, Eureka's titles. Criterion disables its use. It may be up to the Blu-ray author -- perhaps it's part of the licensing agreement? The magnification works for all DVDs.

I have a Philips blu ray player with a zoom function. But as stated above, it will not work with every disc. I use it only to study details, not to watch an entire film in a zoom mode.

Never really heard of certain discs preventing the player from doing it's job.

I'm more pissed that this fancy Samsung 51"plasma didn't have that option but my old 42" LG LCD tv has multiple option for changing the picture (4:3, 16:9, Just Scan, Zoom, Cinema Zoom)

Call me a fascist, but IMO, no BD player or TV should have any zooming functions whatsoever. Everything should play at OAR. Tough if you can't deal with black bars. The idiots who zoom don't realize that they're missing a fairly large percentage of image.

Some of the "idiots" who zoom are just looking at video detail when the movie is paused at a certain frame. Zoom would be nicer if the picture could be scrolled up and down when it's zoomed.

Would probably be better to get something like a Panasonic Viera, my model has multiple zoom functions and can adjust the picture height.

I'm all for OAR but I need a zoom feature if anything on the TV to compensate for non-anamorphic material, be it bonus features in SD on a Blu-ray Disc, or shows I record from HD signals in SD to my DVD Recorder which retain the 16:9 framing but become non-anamorphic when recorded. Same goes for SD or HD channels that play widescreen shows in a format for 4:3 TVs, a zoom function will fill the screen and won't crop.

I don't really get all worked up if people want to zoom the pic, I generally zoom my Lds. I also much prefer 16x9 over scope images. Especially with the transfer to digital filmmaking, you need it to be 16x9 to be 1080 otherwise it is about 850p give or take in scope.

The seiki sr212 from kmart/sears talked about in another thread has several zoom intervals, including zoom OUTS (i thought that was kind of weird, don't know what it would be used for. you can shrink the image down to fill about a 1/6 of the screen)

But yeah it zooms in at 3 intervals and you can use the arrow buttons to adjust. Player is $60

It may zoom in more than they would want. I tested it on Let the Right One In (a 2:35 movie) and the in-frame subtitles were no longer visible.

I have a Samsung TV and BD player depending on the source both can do different things. If I watch a letterboxed movie on TV the TV can zoom-in to make the picture the correct shape. But if I watch 4:3 letterbox material on my player when it's set for display 4:3 images in the correct aspect ratio then the player prohibits any changes and the TV doesn't have the functions to zoom in to fill the screen with the picture. If I'm watching a 2.35:1 Blu-ray the Samsung can zoom-in 2 times so the picture fills the screen without letterboxing. So it would suit your parents needs.

That's weird unless the subtitles are burnt into the video every DVD or BD player I've used would keep the subtitles on-screen whilst zooming in on the picture. If I zoomed in using the TV's zoom then the subtitles would go of-frame.
