Im gonna assume that most people here havent heard either speaker you are referring to, I have heard the XQ series, but the bookshelfs were used as surrounds while I was watching AVP, so i couldnt tell you anything about them musically, but I could tell they were very detailed. I have not heard the Studio Monitors so Im of little help there, however I have heard lots of DTs, but for my tastes, Id take the Kefs and their pedigree over the DTs.

The KEF LS50 has had rave reviews and from what I have read is a steal @ $1500.

Default Older Mirage speaker purchase

Hello,
I'm new to the forums here and I'm hoping to get some advice/suggestions on a purchase I am considering. We are moving from a smaller home to a larger one where I will have enough space to invest in an upgraded sound system. Currently, we listen to most of our music from a pair of small bookshelf NHT speakers. For movies, we have an Onkyo home theatre in a box setup with the receiver being a tx-sr606. Anyway, I work with a colleague who is moving and wants to sell his Mirage speakers: a pair of M5si's, M7si's and an MCsi center channel. I've listened to his setup and thought it sounded great, but I am a novice in terms of audio equipment. I understand that these speakers are from the early nineties and quite old, but are of good quality. My questions are: Would this be a good purchase for listening to 70%music and 30% movies? Would my receiver (onkyo tx-606) be able to handle these? Are there other factors I should consider? Finally, what would be a fair price for these speakers being in good condition but older? I really appreciate any advice/suggestions on this, so thanks in advance for any replies

I believe they would be pretty good. I think my dad has the M5si with 8" woofer still? I recal him having the MCsi while back to. From what I recall when I was younger they sounded great. He listened to a lot of music on them and I always sat on the couch listening to. A separate amp never hurts though maybe you can find a use amp to help. A Emotiva or another brand used. Couple guys on here would prolly have better advice on a amp. If you have a little extra cash to spend. I am sure the Onkyo would power em but never hurts to take the strain off your receiver.

What he said. The older Mirages can be a bit of a tough load on a receiver/amp. Start with the receiver, and maybe in time graduate to a dedicated amp making 100Wpc.

Just my thought Goat1, if his coworker was selling Logan's he would probably be asking for advice on the Logan thread.
