Picked this up today, nothing major, but I did enjoy it when it came out. Purchased it in prep for the next Horror Hound convention, then just found out Virgina Madson had to scratch.

You can certainly spend your money accordingly to what makes you happy. However, I'd wager that if this video processor is anything like the other DVDO video processors I've used, the perceptible gain in PQ won't be 'night and day' for $400. I'd first try using a dvd recorder or look for an old Faroudja VP-100. Unfortunately, miracles can't be made from the old source material. The DCDi chip from Faroudja from about 10 years ago is also pretty solid and can be found in a handful of older products that likely could be acquired for dirt cheap now.

All DVDOs that I'm aware of have pretty rudimentary comb filters. You can see whether the comb filter of the unit is any damn good by either:

1. Using the Snell & Wilcox "floating orb" test screen in the Video Essentials LD

OR

2. Finding a movie with a moving screen door in one of it's scenes (like Deliverance)

If you can see rainbows in the "standing orb" or screen mesh of a movie, then the comb filter is crap, just like the majority of comb filters found in DVDO products.

For $500-800, you can buy the Onkyo TX-NR809 or TX-NR818, both of which have the HQV Vida VHD1900 video processor and are WONDERFUL upscalers for noisy analog sources (like LD).

Actually, the Faroudja NRS (with DCDi chip) is a hell of a lot better than any DVDO unit I've seen used with LD. If the "letterbox" function on the Faroudja NRS cropped less of the picture than it does, my search for the "perfect" scaler would have ended when I acquired one about five years ago.

Would any body happen to have a rip of the PCM mono track from The Terminator? I'd really love to listen to it again. Its so much better then the 5.1 remix.

Anyone else having a hard time lately buying off of Craigslist, or if you're also in Canada, Kijiji? I have had some people responding to my "Wanted" ad lately who seem to think that their copies of Jurassic Park and Speed are worth $5-20 each, or looking to sell an entire collection for $5 a disc, but not willing to part it out, so they're looking for me to pay like $500 for 100 discs.

The worst is people trying to quote me ebay prices by looking at DaDon's and other high priced sellers buy it now auction prices, not actually completed listings "I can let my Godfather box set go for $100, but nothing less, cause it's on ebay for more than that"

Yes, I've hated for years how people appoint eBay the divine king of item pricing. Most of us look for other avenues to avoid the price gauging there. Luckily nothing I need these days has to be purchased on eBay. But Craigslist does tend to bring out the amateur price wizards in people from what I've seen, as well.

I find that it's becoming a real ***** to find good prices for LaserDiscs, at least here in Winnipeg. I met a seller at a flea market who was willing to sell me "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Power Rangers: The Movie" for $40 a disc because they are "Rare collectors items". I prompted offered a much lower rate ($3.00 each) and she said "They go for $40 on ebay"...

Sure they advertise them on Ebay for $40 a pop, but no one is stupid enough to pay that money for a disc. I didn't have very kind words to say to her.
