I can confirm that statement, you may want to try an amplified hdmi splitter.

I also could not get my PS3 to play 3D.
I ran the hdmi through my reciever (Onkyo RC-180) and directly to my tv (Samsung 51D550) with known good cables both to no avail.
I also went through my PS3 settings and couldn't fix the problem, I couldn't even get to the point where I select my screen size.....

So I threw in the towel and purchased a 3D BluRay player (Sony BDP-S590) for $130 and couldn't be happier.

One other option is to buy a blu ray player with two HDMI outs - Panasonic and Sony sell them. One HDMI to your TV for video and the other to your non 3-D receiver for sound. That is what I'm doing as I can't afford to upgrade my receiver at this point.

Not necessarily true. I've had older receivers pass through 3D video after hooking up right to the TV first.
