I was going to say please elaborate but I see what you mean. I think companies have currently gone overboard with their designs, atleast for non-functional or aesthetical designs. Although I do like Sony's continued firmware support and their reliability I won't be purchasing this player.

I have the S790 and love it. Best PQ i've ever seen. I don't mind the new design however, important features like the 16 bits signal and super bit mapping has been remove from the new players. Whether this will make any difference in PQ remains to be seen.....

The design is ugly as hell so I am going with either the S590 or S790. I have no clue what Sony was thinking when they designed the 2013 Blu ray players and who ever came up with the design should be fired!

Default 4k Upsacaling in the 5100?

i really don't care how the unit looks. My main concern is how it works...how is the picture quality, the build quality etc

Can anyone tell me if the 5100 has 4K upscaling like the 790???

I'd like to see a good review between these 2 units - does anyone know if one exists?

thanks

As far as we know right now it won't have 4K upscaling.

It looks like there may still be a unit yet to be released which would take the place of the 790. Just too bad the 790 isn't available here in Canada otherwise I would probably buy that one

I just bought the 5100 and have to say that it is going back. It's load speeds are not too bad, the PQ is not bad at all for blu ray but DVD upconversion is not that stellar. The streaming of media is sketchy and sometimes drops off and you need to reboot the machine to get a connection again. I have heard many good things about the 790, but not available here in Canada.

4K upscaling is not really beneficial, unless you have a 4K UHDTV! Otherwise, 4K upscaling is pretty much a useless feature.

That is bad news for people wanting to buy the S5100

They are better off buying the S790 and I ordered the S790 today so I am excited to get it on Friday!

can someone post pictures of the navigation/gui of this model, i wonder if Sony finally changed it or updated it. Any chance that HBOGO may be included with a firmware updated down the road?

The navigation on the S5100 looks like what the PS3 has. IS that called the cross-media bar? And the first thing my S5100 did last night after setup was install a new firmware. So if they plan on changing the GUI, it wasn't with the newest firmware.

I don't mind the cross media bar. But the Hulu+ and the Amazon apps seem outdated. I'm hoping they upgrade them to match what most of the other devices have.
