Default Sony BDP-S5100 vs. Sony BDP-S590

Wanting to get a new Blu-Ray player, to upgrade from my chincy old S185 that doesn't even have WiFi. Anyone have this year's newest model (S5100) or would you recommend last year's model/another Blu-Ray player entirely. Need WiFi and 3D would be nice if I ever decide to get a 3D TV. Also, do any of you know if the S5100 runs off of the same OS as the S185 (the watered-down XMB)?

I just bought the 590 at christmas. I love it (especially compared to my older model). Very fast load times, easy to use. I love the wifi but to be honest, I have had some lag in audio voices and lip sync when watching netflix. Since this is my first wifi netflix experience, I don't know if it is the player or netflix, or my connection. Maybe someone else will chime in too.

Don't know about the S5100 but I've had an S590 since November and love it. Like you I don't have a 3D TV but decided to get a 3D player so I'm ready for when I do.

According to Sony the S5100 upscale DVDs, TV shows and sports to 3D and easily turns 2D films and TV into virtual 3D viewing at the press of a button. A really good and technically applicable reason for buying!

Thanks for the input, everyone. While I have absolutely no doubt that the S590 is an excellent player for my needs, I ultimately chose to go with the S5100. I personally like the new design, unlike some others in the community, as I don't stack anything on top of the player (or ever plan to). Beyond that though, I think the primary motive behind my decision was to keep up-to-date with firmware updates the best way possible. I've heard from many people that Sony tends to only release a few firmware patches for each individual player, so if I were to encounter any issues with the S590, the probability that Sony would address it in the future is much lower than it is with the S5100. At this point, judging from Sony's big-business mentality, I think it's a fair assumption that Sony's left the S590 in their rear-view mirror and everyone with that player has to cross their fingers that they don't come across anymore detrimental glitches from this point onward.

Additionally, the S590 is only $3 less on Amazon than the S5100, which kind of seems ridiculous to me, as it's last year's model. I guess that's what happens if a product continues to sell well, even if it's obsolete. The stakes aren't incredibly high for me and at any rate, I'm making a SUBSTANTIAL upgrade from my S185 (no Wi-Fi has been the bane of my existence). I can always return it if it's absolutely abysmal. I'll keep you all posted on how the S5100 treats me and I'm planning on uploading an unboxing so you can get a view of that "premium design" in a more realistic view.

I've been using my S5100 for ten days now. It is very quick with BD playback. From what I've read it's supposed to be ten seconds faster at starting a BD than the S590. The S5100 also has access to the Netflix 3D streams. I plan on picking a second one up for my secondary 3D viewing location.

Thanks for your impressions. Definitely excited to get my hands on it... Mine's set to be delivered from Amazon on Wed.

kinda bummed out with the new models from sony. No rca, or compon. no optical audio port. you get digital coaxial out and hdmi. thats it. Also according to Consumer electronics show 2013 models of tvs are supposed to get 10 ultraviolet movies and new blu-ray players to get 5 free movies. Yeah none of these sony's come with anything.

I dont teven think that promotion ahs gone live yet..None of the 2013 Tvs that Ive seen get movies either so theres that as well......As far as connections, the companies are trying to move people to HDM (IMO)I, and upgrade their equipment so they ahve begin phasing out analog connections. There are not many players for 2013 that will have analog connectiosn form what I have seen, so if you need those your choices will be limited....

I have the bdp-S590 and enjoy it. I would suggest the 5100 if you are having issues with wifi for I believe they have improved that in the latter model. Just the same my bdp-S590 has taken everything I have tried on it.

Went to Target last night and again looked at the S5100 and I noticed that it had a coaxial connection but no Optical connection. That sucks because thats what I like to use so I just may stay with my S590 which has been an excellent player so far.

Not sure what the issue is here but wouldn't HDMi be the only connection needed , using anything else for audio and you lose HD audio.

btw - I have the Sony BDP S590 Blu Ray Player and love it. For streaming I never tried the wifi but ran Cat5, no issues w/ audio or PQ when using Netflix.

Default 5100 experiences/vs 590?

Hey How is everyone liking the new sony? I was just going to pick one up. Its good to hear good reviews although I will not be using for streaming(Apple Tv). However how is everything else on it. I have had bad luck with my last two players both lasted just over a year. IDK why My Panny 220 and now my sony 590. Sounds like it maybe opticle or disc spinning issues. I am a heavy user. I was thinking maybe dust is getting into it and that is why I like that the opticle drive is sealed. Anyway how do you guys like it. I can get either for a good price 2o buck difference.

Thank You
