USA King Kong Escapes (1967) / King Kong Vs Godzilla (1962) - April 1, 2014

Courtesy of Universal

King Kong Escapes Blu-ray

Quote:
It's King Kong to the rescue when a giant robot threatens to destroy Tokyo in the gripping King Kong Escapes! The action begins when the conniving Dr. Who builds a robot Kong in order to retrieve a highly radioactive element for his mysterious benefactor, Madame X. When the robot proves less than reliable, the devious duo scheme to kidnap the real Kong from his remote island home of Mondo. But interfering with their plans are the heroic trio of U.S. Cmdr. Carl Nelson, Lt. Jiro Nomura, and Kong's current crush, Lt. Susan Miller. It's up to them to outwit the greedy ape-nappers in this sci-fi adventure that takes Kong to unprecedented heights of excitement.

King Kong vs. Godzilla Blu-ray

Quote:
The two mightiest monsters of all time battle in the thrilling adventure classic, King Kong vs. Godzilla. When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks an unsuspecting village and an enormous octopus. Meanwhile, far below the sea, a submarine crew unleashes reptilian terror when they melt a block of ice and release the ferocious Godzilla from his icy lair. When both destructive monsters descend on Tokyo, it's a fight that holds the future of mankind in the balance in this knock-out film that was the first theatrical release to bring its larger-than-life contenders to the big screen in glorious color.

Separate releases? But these would've made a perfect double feature!

Oh well, day one purchase!

When they released these on DVD, they just released the American versions. Hoping they include the original Japanese versions this time.

These are probably the same masters which Universal released on DVD years ago. Both the American editions w/out the original Japanese audio - which means not only are me getting shorter versions of the films but the alternate U.S. mix which contains different music (from the Universal catalog) for KING KONG VS GODZILLA.
Both masters on DVD look great - the masters for the DVDs were taken from HD masters.

Great year so far for the big G. Obviously trying to cash in on the new movie which gives me hope that even more blu releases will be announced.
Various: "Can you kill it?" "I believe something can." "A monster?" "No...a god."

I <3 Kaiju films but KK vs. G was one of the biggest piles of shit ever. I'll still nab this though.

How is King Kong Escapes? I am no intrigued to check it out upon hearing Mecha King Kong is in it.

The watered down, missing 20 minutes, no Ifukube score, awfully dubbed version of KK vs G? Er, no thanks. I want Ishiro Honda's film.

If Criterion had announced their release to only include King of the Monsters I don't think there would be many happy folks here.

This is an awful news. When the thread starter annonced that king kong vs godzilla was coming to blu ray, I held my breath for the japanese uncut version. But no. Of course not. Universal couldn't care less. In 2014, it is unnaceptable to not have the original version included on a blu ray release. You'd think we were still in the days of shoddy vhs for godsake! Well, I guess I'll stick to my bootleg and give the shaft to Universal. Too bad though, i was dying to get a good blu ray of this movie.

For those unaware, this is not just a case of the film being dubbed. Like King of the Monsters, it's a different film, with western actors shoved in everywhere:

Universal only has the rights to the English version of the movie so obviously that's what they could release. It was the same for them on DVD so this should come as no surprise to anyone. This is also the version that was released theatrically in the US so most people likely know this version than the Japanese one here.

Well its been the same news for the same titles when they had DVD releases ..its the same versions. Universal could get the Japanese version if they wanted to, I think. They probably dont have much interest outside of just putting the movies out the same way again this time on blu ray. Im still getting both even though I just watch the KKVG Japanese version. We can hope one day that version will get a release.
