I'd verify that's your resolution -
Running a second display with a different resolution maybe?

WinDVD has more and better features. Better picture and audio for 2.1.

WinDVD seems unstable - lots of hangs, etc I prefer somewhat PowerDVD. much more stable. 2.1 sound quality does not bother me as the minimum I can get natively from my laptop is 4.1 (yes, no 2.1 for me), while the maximum is 7.1 (externally) It plays DVD okay, but not BD. I lowered the resolution down to 1440x900. It does work, but I can't be bothered to change the resolution down to 1440x900 each time just to have an access to WinDVD BD. I think I'll use PowerDVD for BD and WinDVD for DVD. Mind that 1680x1050 was okay for WinDVD before reinstallation The history: 2 months ago: installed clean windows vista and windvd.... result, not okay. 1 month ago, trying to access windvd because powerdvd did not work. it surprisingly work. now, it does not work again. I sent e-mail to Corel.

I might have already taken the necessary step then. If i understand what your saying correctly. I disabled everything. I've set every drive to "Do nothing". Am i good to go, or is DEP something else entirely?

PowerDVD with nVidia PureVideo processing looks amazing with my BDs. Its codecs and audio decoding mesh well with Windows Media Player. It decodes TrueHD and multichannel PCM tracks, along with DTS-HD. I honestly can't remember the last time it crashed either. Less CPU usage as well. On the other hand WinDVD is a clusterfrak. It crashes as often as it plays, it doesn't have as good a sound decoder. The video looks processed. It also deposits an annoying tray application. |

I have no problem with any of the audio codecs at all WinDVD 9 Plus for BD also decodes TrueHD, DTS-HD,DTS-HD-MA, and LPCM also (just like PowerDVD) I only use 17 to 19% CPU usage WinDVD 9 Plus BD also upconverts SD-DVD, PowerDVD can't PowerDVD is 2.0 and WinDVD 9 Plus BD is just 1.1 other than that they are pretty much equal - except that I have never-never had a BD crash with WinDVD 9 Plus BD (Just finished watching Flyboys in DTS-HD-Master 1506 bitrate)

DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is a Windows XP2 / Vista / 2003 Server service that watches for "mailitious code" exploiting windows services and features. This is accessed from System Properties - Advanced - Performance - Settings (on XP anyway - Vista you probably have to make a couple left turns and have a security key from a virgin goat to turn it off)
Sounds like you're confusing it with "AutoRun".

PowerDVD, or something here, can and does upconvert/upscales SD DVD quite well. Both version 7.3 and v 8 have done this quite well. But, it may very well be the nVidia GPU/software doing the scaling. *HERE* using PowerDVD(7.3 or 8) SD DVDs do get scaled nicely.

My PC does spike to 32% when running All2HD (HW Acceleration off) but I still see no hinderances - yeah its a bigger load but my PC can take it.

Both players need work: I like WinDVD
I used PowerDVD 5.0 OEM for a long time and found it to suit my needs very well. When it was time to upgrade it was the obvious choice for me. When I bought a Pioneer blue-ray DVD-ROM it came with WinDVD+BD but it was vista only so I downloaded the trail vesion of PowerDVD+BD straight from Cyberlink. Didn't like it very much but it worked OK for the movies I tried. Movies took forever to load and my standard DVDs took about 8x longer than normal to load. (I later found out that this is probably an issue with the Pioneer drive). I also disliked the visual design and having to look at the pretty girl worshipping the DVD every time I loaded the program. Despite this I bought the full version of PowereDVD+BD. It Wouldn't install on my system and Cyberlink support couldn't solve issue despite multiple emails. Cyberlink refunded my money without incident. Bought WinDVD9+BD and it worked well enough but there was still the issue with long startup lags for my Blu-Ray and SD-DVD titles. I returned the Pioneer drive and WinDVD9+BD without incident. A month or 2 later I bought an LG H20L Blu Ray drive and WinDVD9+BD and with the exception of one title that won't play I have been happy with it. Here is my review of WinDVD9+BD with the LG-H20L 1) Disk start lag times are acceptable for BD-DVD and normal for SD-DVD 2) The design and layout is well thought out, unobtrusive and non-annoying 3) AlltoHD works very well for animated movies, so-so for others 4) The filters are mostly fluff but some badly coded SD-DVD showed improvement 5) Does support Nvidia PurevideoHD 6) For some Blue-ray titles (Disney), the play controls change depending on the title and for some they are almost missing and functions like SKIP,FF, REW... must be selected by mouse. Some work perfectly so this may occurr with all players. 7) Some titles just won't play (for me only "Youth without Youth" so far. 8) No picture or stuttering issues. So far it played flawlessly or it doesn't play. |
