You could take a chance buying directly from them, they may still have slips on them. I remember asking gkids one time about one of their older releases and they said they still had slips for them. You could try buying from their inventory.

Good point, I do rememeber them saying that now. Too bad. Many aren't as easy to find in store as the Disney releases.

Well, it's the film itself I care about most and I'm happy with the transfer.

Since GKIDS stated that they're "carefully reviewing transfers, updating subtitles (where appropriate) and going nuts on the QC process", they darn well better deliver on their promises.

Once people get them and have confirmation, then I'll buy them. Well I'll probably just buy Kiki only.

Think of it ike listening to a CD or .mp3 after coming from a Record.
Basically, the audio file is missing "depth" and fullness, parts are missing.
It is downgraded audio.
The bad thing is, new Records are made from CDs and .mp3s so they all suck.

I used to have a huge music cd collection. between moving, lending and re-selling, I'm at zero.
there were a select few that I really wanted to keep, but I think my ex wound up with them...

A Record, you mean Vinyl?

Explain how a CD sucks. Both Vinyl and CD has it's ups and downs.

CDs have loss of audio information, not as bad as a .mp3 though.

Just saw this on GKIDS' Twitter, looks like the only new bonus feature, at-least for Totoro, is " Textless Opening & End Credits" which is nice, but not worthy of a double-dip in my opinion.

To be fair to GKIDS, the clean OP/ED was the only bonus feature from the Japanese BD that wasn't included on the Disney release. It's a promising tangible sign that GKIDS isn't going to be limited on their re-releases to whatever Disney saw fit to use originally. In this case, it's unfortunate that there just aren't any more bonus features for Totoro that already exist.

Also note that it's not under GKIDS' purview to create new bonus features for their re-releases. They're a much smaller label than Disney, and have correspondingly disparate resources at hand. What Discotek did with their Castle of Cagliostro release is a significant outlier and shouldn't be expected here, as that was a single-film "passion project" and cannot be reasonably replicated over the 20+ Ghibli films that GKIDS will have the video rights for.

That said, Totoro is one of the films that had a defect-free Disney release so I'm sure that GKIDS knows that getting people to double-dip for it will be somewhat more difficult as compared to those movies that got botched Disney BDs (e.g. Laputa, Mononoke, Ponyo, Nausicaa, Kiki, and Pom Poko).

Can you please explain what excatly is wrong with the Disney releases?
This is the first I'm hearing of any issues... besides newly redone audio tracks... and even then, those aren't really issues...

Dubtitles are hardly a non-issue. Unless you understand Japanese, dubtitles render the presence of the native Japanese track null as they are just a transcribed version of the dub. You may as well just watch it dubbed or on mute with dubtitles. The presence of the original audio with accurate subtitles is very important to a great deal of anime viewers.
