The quick look at the disc and screenshots I posted earlier were done on using PC running Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre (v6.7.199), where the film played looking exactly as it does in said shots. However, finally sitting down to watch the entire film yesterday using a standalone Blu-ray player and 60in plasma TV, it revealed itself to be a true 1.85:1-framed encode with none of the cropping witness when playing it on the computer.
The PC player uses the same settings as the 100s of other discs that I've put through it before and after, none of which show the same kind of cropping - so I've no idea why it happens with this one Blu-ray disc. As for my opinion of the new disc? Well, having watched it all the way through (presented correctly) the encode looks reasonably good and I wouldn't be too surprised to learn that it stems from the same HD master as the earlier Optimum/StudioCanal. The DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio is also perfectly acceptable, if a little quieter than I'd usually like (requiring me to crank up my amp a few more notches). However, given the complete lack of bonus features (and the uncertainty about the curious playback issue with Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre), there's still absolutely no way I can recommend this new release over the previous feature-packed Special Edition Blu-ray. |

I got a review copy as well. I believe it is indeed legit, I just think MGM in the UK are outsourcing the **** out of their catalogue titles for dirt cheap hence why so many small companies such as 101 films, Simply Media, Three Wolves are releasing MGM stuff.

I'd really like to know more about this release. I have absolutely no problem with grabbing yet another version of Hardware on blu if its got extra value to it. And it won't take much! |
