Thanks for the tip. Mine to will hang on "wait" when I turn off the blu-ray player when the disc is in and on. I tried the holding down the power button for 10 seconds and it worked. It shut down and I was able to power up without it hanging. At least now I do not have to unplug it from the wall anymore. Did you always have this issue or did this only pop up after you updated the firmware. I never noticed this happening before.

I bought the BDP-S580 for $110 shipped from Amazon. Then I immediately scratched the WD box off my list. This S580 plays everything I've thrown at it. I've dumped 25 fps HD MKVs, DivX AVIs and lossless music files onto a 1 TB USB drive, and it plays them all without a hitch. Even lossless 5.1 audio plays perfectly. It's a great little media player.

Oh, and it's also a great Blu-ray player. It loads a lot faster than my old Panny. I like the XMB interface, and it seems to have access to more streaming video and audio sources than I'll ever use. It also plays SACDs and SACD-Rs with no problems.

All in all, a fantastic player!
Your comments are very useful to me ´cos I´m about to buy the bdps580. Let me ask you please, did you try connecting it to an amplifier via the xlr audio outputs (the ones in the rear)? In this condition what about the sound?, still plays at 24bits 96khz hi fi files? I checked somewhere that playing 24/96 was only through the coaxial output, is that true? Many thanks in advance for your reply.

Blu Jedi Master,
I am having this same issue and I will try the 10-second thing with the power button. I also do not remember this "starting" after an update. I seem to be experiencing it since I purchased it. Any other advise on this one?

To eliminate the "wait" state. I believe I had to push stop on the remote so the player would show the Sony Home menu and then power down the player.

Yup mine turns off fine everytime as long as i push stop and bring it to the home screen first. I believe mine has been like that since the first day I owned it. I'm thinking about buying the s590 pretty soon and moving the 580 to my living room.

Default Slightly different issue

The issue is not so much shutting it down normally after viewing sometihng. Of course stopping and shutting down works fine every time. This happens when the player is idle after playing Netflix, DVD, or something else and then goes to screen saver. No need to hit the Stop button in that case, just powering off the machine and the screen flashes Wait forever. Now, I did try BJM's suggestion to just hold the power button and that seems to work. That will at least save me from unplugging the thing all the time...

Anyone tried the CinemaNow (CN) app since they went Ultraviolet (UV) 2 days ago? All I get is empty icons. My LG device with CN works fine and all my UV movies load. I have current firmware from 8/8/12. If u also have errors please send a support ticket to Sony as I did. Thanks.

I'm having another issue with my 580. When I turn the unit on it'll show the regular start up screen with the blu ray logo, but then all I get is a black screen and it never makes it to the main menu. I'll put a movie in and it'll show that it's playing on the unit but I'll have no picture or sound.

I got a "refurbished" one of theses today (which I think might have been returned due to a scratch on top of the players the metal casing) I wasn't looking to upgrade my older sony blu ray player, but for the price I couldn't resist taking a chance. $19.99

The CinemaNow app has been fixed also. It now loads your Ultraviolet library.

I've had my S580 for awhile but just a few days ago got a dsl wireless network set up. The Gracenote Music Search works just fine for cds and is able to connect to GN and update but when I try the Video Search, what I get is "Could not obtain information from Gracenote" with the option to retry or close. It then shows my video history(some BRs and dvds I've watched literally months ago).
Has anyone else had this happen?
I forgot to mention that I've updated firmware to version M07.R.0624.
