No if they base the movie around Earth again that will be the end of the reboots in my opinion. People will not be happy, especially because they said they were starting the five year mission now. It should take place entirely on alien worlds.

I agree.

Also, the 3rd movie better not be a revenge plot again. The thing I hated most about Into Darkness is that it was practically a remake of the 2009 movie.

no friggin' kidding.... and I genuinely liked the first one and didn't mind the detour the second one was. Third one needs to get back on track....

I would love to see the third be a more cerebral sci-fi movie in the vein of TOS and TNG since they are on the five year mission now. However, the "masses" may not like a slow-burn sci-fi movie with little action

Really liked the first two, guess we'll have to see if the 3rd is just as great or dud.

With Orci and Kurtzman at the helm... I wouldn't bet on this movie being "cerebral" or "slow-burn". There have been many films scripted by Orci & Kurtzman, and not one of those could be described by those two words. I would expect a movie that attempts to be a rip-roaring rolicking romp of an adventure. Because as everyone knows, that's what Star Trek has always been about.

The slow-burn explorer thing gets boring real fast. I'll take these new ones with more action any day.

Totally agree, the third should be far from earth.

I still say that based on the first two films that the third film will have to involve Spock getting lost on his way to the restroom and they spend the entire third film trying to find him. Star Trek Spock Is Lost should be the title.

ĎStar Trek 3′: Roberto Orci Wants to Direct

Over the past decade, the name pairing ďKurtzman and OrciĒ has become a loaded phrase: it connotes blockbuster-sized sci-fi and superhero properties which often make loads of dough, but which arenít always realized in a manner that fans love. Now Kurtzman and Orci are breaking up their big-screen writing and producing partnership so that each can focus on directing. More important, however, is that Roberto Orci is now working hard to take the directorís chair of Star Trek 3.

Variety has a big piece on Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci breaking up their big-screen partnership.

The real news, however, is that Orci has been lobbying to direct Star Trek 3, which he is also writing with with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne. The report is that JJ Abrams and Bad Robot are in favor of him getting the job, as are David Ellison and Skydance Productions, the chief financiers.

Paramount, however, evidently isnít ready to take the plunge just yet. And no wonder, as Orci doesnít have a feature under his belt as a director. Hard to blame the studio, too, as fans donít like Orciís contributions to Trek. Heís not going to be a popular choice to direct, especially given that the release of Star Trek 3 will be timed to coincide with the franchiseís 50th anniversary in 2016.

Borys Kit of THR, meanwhile, paints Orci as being just a bit further along in the process to get the job:

Quote:
Yes, Kurtzman and Orci are splitting up. But more interestingly, Orci is in early talks to direct STAR TREK 3. No negotiations yet but...
Kurtzman and Orci will continue to work together for television, and some of the projects the two already have in development together, such as Spider-Man 3, will continue.

But Kurtzman is already set to direct Venom for Sony, and at Universal heís working on revivals of monster franchises such as The Mummy and Van Helsing. With all that, and Orci lobbying for Star Trek 3, both of the guys could be busy for a long time on those projects. Thatís good news for those who, letís put this nicely, donít love their approach to fan properties. At this point Iím willing to cut loose my interest in this incarnation of Star Trek if it means the duo split up and step aside as screenwriters for future series.

I was surprised no one had gotten to it yet, to be honest. I was too busy making lunch to notice that this had been broken by THR.

Response is mixed at best, for obvious reasons, with this news. I'm not saying Orci can't do it, but I'm not so sure handing him the third 'Star Trek' film as his first directing gig is such a great idea. Sure, he's been with the series since the beginning, and he's writing the new script, but that doesn't mean he's also a competent director. He's also one of the biggest problems fans have with, not just this series, but many other movies as well, for his stories and the way they're put together. This is a big question mark for me. Curious to see how it plays out...

Agreed. I think I'd prefer someone else to direct. Don't know who just yet, but someone else.

I am hoping Orci does direct and that the movie bombs so this whole Trek experiment can finally end. So much potential wasted on cgi effects and trying to hide surprises everyone already knows not to mention horrible scripts. And bet that the borg, or something similar will be in the next film. They already mentioned that it would be cool to see them - the same thing they did with Khan right after the 2009 movie came out and that is exactly what happened. They might not use the borg proper but it will be the borg in some shape or form.

Can't know how he will go, but for image alone prefferable no Orci at the helm. Largely for all reasons mentioned, experience (or lack thereof) the anniversary and for me no angst, less gamble. Brad Bird or somrone

you know though, I wouldn't be surprised if he got it. JJ didn't have that many director credits before he did the 2009 move. Orci is in a similar spot - mostly known for writing and directing so I can see it happening.
