I found a brand new never opened PS3 fat system for 280 bucks on craigslist.
I don't think it plays ps2 games though I'm not sure. Buy or Pass? I would probably save it as a collectors item or maybe sell it later.

Unless if you really need a PS2 with a proper wireless controller, it's very difficult to recommend getting a backwards compatible fat model, unless if it's somehow covered by a warranty. Even then, you could also consider going with PCSX2 (A PS2 emulator) which can let me play PS2 games in HD (depending on your PC hardware), and download MotionInJoy to use your PS3 controller. It's not the most convenient way, but it's a great alternative. I have been playing the PS2 version of Persona 4 in HD and connected my wireless PS3 controller with a bluetooth dongle as well.
To answer your question though, you are getting it as a collector's item, assuming if it has backwards compatiblity, but you are really better off getting a PS2. Then again, production of PS2s have halted recently, so the deal for it isn't so bad. Edit: Pardon my ignorance, but did you ask the guy what model, or what bundle of PS3 did he buy?

I probably wouldn't be using it for myself since I already have a ps3 slim and a ps2 slim.
The one I found is an 80gb non backwards compatible model. I was just wondering if it would be smart to buy it and resell it for more money later on.......I can't believe its sealed in the box. |

I thought the only PS3 fats that had any resell value were the PS2 backwards compatible... Otherwise people avoid like the plague due to YLOD..

The older fat models ran at 200/380 watt/max and had 90nm chips.
The newer fat models starting with CECHJxx and later run at 140/280 watt/max and had 65nm chips. I'm guessing the newer fat models are safe from ylod because they run more efficient than the older ones. Still a bad buy? |

My question would be what appeal does it have for you? Is it strictly as a collector's item? If so then go for it. Otherwise I see no reason to buy that for $280 when you can get a brand new ultra slim for $250. Aesthetics notwithstanding (which is subjective anyway), the newer models are better IMO than the older ones. They run more efficiently and bitstream lossless audio if you're using it for a blu-ray player.

Well, if it truely has never been opened then it will still have Other OS which is extremely rare now so in the future you could find that one of these crazy people that spend tens of thousands of $ on a NES game would probably want to tell you to shut up and take their money.

Aye Sukraj.
I've had both my fatboys since launch night and they're still both in mint nick. They've had more use than I can mention too. I've used the backwards compatibilty loads over the years, and all four usb ports get used quite frequently. I know which model I'd rather have! |

I had the MGS fat PS3, bought it on launch day. Then in late 2011 it started giving me problems. On almost any game that wasn't a Playstation exclusive, it would freeze up after 5 minutes of play. The only non Playstation exclusive game that gave me no problems was Saints Row The Third. I was really excited for Borderlands 2 but knew my fat PS3 probably wouldn't be able to play it so I traded the fatty into Gamestop for about $200 in credit (I didn't want to try to sell it on Craigslist since it was defective but had no problems trading my defective fat PS3 into Gamestop

if i'm correct there's 3 models that are PS2 compatible. Release date 20 gig and release date 60 gig. And then the Metal Gear Solid 4 edition, which is what i've had for 5 years.
It's nice having that compatibility because i still play a lot of PS2 games (along with the kids discovering just how great the PS2 library was) |
