Seasons 2 and 3 of Avatar look alright on DVD, but season 1 looks AWFUL. Lots of ghosting and halos. And I know I'm part of the problem by responding to this thread, but can a mod please move this to the wishlist forum> Every time it's bumped I think a blu release is imminent.

Good price for a good series. Sad it's not on bluray, and there's too much coming out in October already for me to add this to my list, but I'll probably pick it up soon after in the following months

I am hoping for a good Best Buy % off sale in TV to be able to pick this up. Otherwise, I'll pass even though it's a lot of fun.
Looking to Buy:
Slipcovers

Tom & Jerry: Golden Collection Volume One
300/Troy/Alexander Revisited (Triple Feature)
Pitch Perfect (BD/DVD/UV/DC)

DCU Animated STEELBOOKS For Sale

Maybe its just more obvious during the early episodes, and I'm not sure how best to describe it, but the moving characters were plagued by "jaggies". I'm sure there must be a technical term for it. As a previous poster commented, I don't think this was as bad in the later seasons, but kept popping up in season 1 and to my eyes was quite distracting.

And this is a fault that was clear on R1 DVD, R2 DVD and the Netflix presentation of it (I've watched the show on all three).

For what it's worth, I was just looking at the Toonzone listing of features on the new set, and the disc contents are exactly the same as the existing "Complete Book X" collections, including having the same bonus features and the same bonus discs. This means it's likely these are the same discs as with previous releases in a new package. It appears to be quite a lovely package, though.

It's also present on the Amazon Prime version, the current host for The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The former looks bad to mediocre, and the latter looks gorgeous.

It's an encoding error. Most SD content is interlaced, so when it plays on a progressive scan screen (meaning everything nowadays), it has to be deinterlaced first. The deinterlacer takes consecutive interlaced images (called fields) and combines them into a single progressive image (frames), which is then shown more than once, twice for SD material with a video origin. The pattern in which this occurs is called the cadence, and it varies depending on the source, resolution and framerate. Sometimes the cadence is flagged incorrectly in the encode, and the wrong pairs of interlaced images are combined, creating the jagged edges you see in moving objects. This is very likely what is happening in the Last Airbender videos.

It's a shame Nickelodeon isn't treating one of their best shows with more respect. I wonder why they aren't pushing TLA more. Could it be they were counting on the live action movie to push interest, and don't think it worth the risk given that movie's failure?

Maybe they don't have access to the original assets needed to do an HD remaster.

Maybe the original series being in 4:3 causes reluctance, as some people still equate that aspect ratio with SD, even though the AR and resolution are unrelated.

If it was originally mastered on SD video, which I strongly suspect is the case, an HD remaster would require recreating each episode from scratch using the original elements, which is very expensive. It's expensive enough that Babylon 5 is only recently being considered for an HD remaster, and cult classic Buffy the Vamire Slayer will likely never get one. TLA is nowhere near Babylon 5 levels of popularity or profitability.

I'd settle for a new encode that cleans up the video image, but it doesn't look like we'll be getting that anytime soon, either.

Has anyone bought the complete series? If so, can anyone share pictures or an unboxing video/review?

Mine should be coming in the mail today. Is there a way to upload pics on this forum on mobile?

Incidentally, the new set is REALLY nice. It's sweet and simple and to the point.

It comes in a slipbox that has three standard-sized DVD cases (one for each season).

The discs are exactly the same as the old box sets, and they still have artwork and everything on the discs (as opposed to just plain silver which seems to be the trend with new complete series sets which I hate ).

If there's one tiny problem (that's not a REAL problem lol) I have it's that there's STILL no disc-by-disc episode list. I'm surprised they didn't at least use clear DVD cases and put the episode lists on the back of the artwork. It's a non-issue though since I've printed out my own episode lists lol.

I'd love to see Legend of Korra get this kind of treatment too. I know there's a complete series coming out but not in the States... hopefully they'll eventually release it here.
