I think I just found forum bliss. Awesome thread!

Here are a few more:

• stationary/stationery
• obtain/attain
• farther/further
• Saying "there are a lot of apples" when really it should be "there is a lot." "A lot" is singular. I catch myself on this one frequently.
• The use or overuse of the ampersand, such as in the title of this thread. The big one that gets me is something like "I need to go to the store for bread & milk." Ugh.
• Improper usage of "you and I" and similar structures; for example: "My brother wants to go to the store with you and I." THAT IS WRONG!! It should be "My brother wants to go to the store with me and you (or "...you and me" or "...us")."
• Using "moment" in a plural form. There's a bit of debate about this one, but my general rule is that a "moment" is an undefined amount of time, typically a small one, and as such you don't have more than one of them. "I'll be ready in a moment" vs. "I'll be ready in a few moments." The first is correct, or at least "more correct."
• Misuse of the word "comprise." This one gets me irritated in a big-time way. It's a word I generally advise that people don't use, unless they really know what they're trying to say. It's a powerful word that sounds great when used correctly, and looks awesome in copy; but if used incorrectly it will make the speaker/author look like a fool.

I've got so many more, but a couple that come to mind that also irritate me:

• Using numerals instead of spelling the number, like in the case of "I need 2 apples." I don't know if people don't understand how this rule works, if it's them just being lazy, or if it's a combination of the two.
• Omitting commas in key spots, such as in the demotivational poster that Beta Man posted. Commas are huge! It also irritates me when people don't use the comma to close out a series, such as "I need this, that and the other," when "I need this, that, and the other" is the correct form. Omitting the comma before "though" also bugs the crap out of me: "I like bears. I like lions more though." That should be "I like lions more, though."

I'll stop for now!
