And perceived to be a flop, so they did the "Back to formula" #3, the Edward Norton "Red Dragon", which actually was pretty darn good. (Mostly because of Norton.)

Now, the #4 prequel-reboot (and "Never let the book author contribute a sequel" entry) "Hannibal Rising", OTOH...
Manhunter, The Silence of The Lambs, Hannibal. Hannibal being the third there. Although Red Dragon is also a great threeqel, being the third of the Hopkins ones specifically.

I'm a random guy, and, for the record, thought it was a horrifically bad ending, to a mediocre film.

This is true. Although probably it's the second most disappointing film, after Phantom Menace.

Yeah, it's...just not a sequel. Or a triquel. To ANYTHING.
(Hence the "kookoo, kookoo!" icon.)

Namely, by fanboys who thought "Well, if it's a movie thread, it SHOULD be about the Dark Knight movies...For what else IS there?"

Let this be a lesson....to you.

The three-installment story-arc is as old as storytelling itself.

It is based upon an extension of the concept of every story having a distinct beginning, middle, and end.
The reason the Hulk is so angry is because he never takes his pants off before transforming, so his stuff is always squished into tiny pants.
Interstellar (aka M. Night Shyamalan's Contact) is a silly, pretentious bore, about as scientifically grounded as Back to the Future, as logically sound as Into Darkness, and don't get me started on the sappy, saccharine metaphysical sentiments. Sorry, but repeating the words "quantum" and "relativity" over and over does not turn hokum into science.

Not to push the point, but Klute, The Parallax View, and All the President's Men form what is unofficially known as Pakula's "Paranoia Trilogy."
