As said, yes and be sure that it's not just a BD-rom drive but a burner.

This seems like a very ignorant question to ask. Let me respond with two questions. Did you need a DVD burner to make DVDs? Are DVDs and Blu-Rays the same? So yes, you need a blu-ray burner to make blu-rays. You also need blu-ray blank discs as well. And better blu-ray burning software than Roxio.

This isn't exactly what you asked, but you can make AVCHD discs without a BD drive. They can be burned to DVDs. They are HD and should play on a Blu-ray player.

For the cost of the burner and Disks blanks you would be better off making digital format videos that can be saved on a flash drive and played across a wide range of players and devices.

But to answer you question you will need a Blu-Ray Burner not just a Blu-ray Drive. You will need Authoring Software (Roxio may work ok) for creating your disk layout and chapter stops, and finally you will need legal content to put on your blu-ray disk.

I should have asked is this just for data storage if so you will definatly be better off with the usb drive. If its Video your recorder probably already stores it in a Video format that could transfer to USB storage for playing on many standard HD devices.

Just a thought

Will Disney ever release Old Yeller and Big Red on blu-ray?

2 Issues.

1.) It would probably need to be an external Drive since The OP indicated this is for a laptop. (I know some laptops have modular drive bays but those are pretty rare so smart money would be on an external drive).

2.) Not only would it need to be an external drive it specifically has to be an External Blu-ray Burner. a standard Blu-ray drive with player software would only allow the playback of Blu-Ray not the creation of blu-ray.

Hope that Helps

Just realized this was an old Thread from 2012. So probably already been dealt with.

Sorry to have participated in the necro bump.
