It's such a shame Federal funding dried up
Truly the Mother and Daddy of aviation. Titanium & Stainless-Steel construction, the very first glass cockpit with Full Authority Digital Engine Control and Fly-By-Wire (in the 1960s!- talk about being at the forefront of electronics. That's like having a 16K OLED in your powder room!) Turbojets the diameter of the biggest modern turbofans, swing wings with full flaps & slats (with integral drive motors to maintain streamlining, unlike modern airliners which house the flap drive gear in external fairings), wide body before the 747, etc, etc, etc... ![]() ![]() Imagine owning a private one today. And decking it out with a nice flying Theater. |

Oofta, I hate to be getting super off topic here. Sorry everyone.
Yeah I read somewhere that the original swept wing configuration wasn't feasable at the time, because it weighed too much. I wish I remember the source, but I read that it would have got it in the air but without any real usable payload. Then due to budgetary and technical reasons they switched to a more standard design. It probably is doable today with composites, but the sonic boom was only the last nail in the coffin. The program stretched on so long that once they approached the gas crisis it was done for on the economics. Even on the Concorde each ticket buying passenger had to essentially buy themselves one ton of jet fuel to make the trip from London to New York. One ton per seat!

My go-to scene I've always used to demo my home theater (even when it was just DVD) was the lobby shootout scene in The Matrix.
Now with a 7.1 Surround system, I agree with many of the other folks favorite scenes: Master And Commander - The opening battle - Epic and astoundingly realistic. Great creaks and groans from the ship, and house shaking cannon fire. The Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship Of The Ring - when the one ring is cut from Sauron's hand - a nice clean LFE drop that will put cracks in your foundation. Overall a great disc sound-wise - very clean 6.1 surround. Prometheus - anything really from this disc is a good demo - huge 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix... Gladiator - the opening battle scene - terrific LFE moments, and a great mix of sound effects that are smartly separated and not just jumbled into the rear surrounds. Blade Runner 30th Anniversary Edition - HUGE. Amazing low-end with great separation. Hero - visually stunning and the battle scenes have killer sound - especially the first battle in the courtyard - great water effects. Sony Bravia 50" KDF-50E3000 Rear Projection LCD

I'm having an old friend over this weekend and am thinking of some good demos perhaps to show off my gear. Here is what I've come up with so far:
1) "Heat"- Armored car heist. Hear the massive impact of the wrecker on the armored car, the ensuing destruction, then the soft flutter of the used car lot ribbons as they fall from their pole. 2) "Raiders of the Lost Ark"- The 20 minutes after the line "Truck? What truck?" On Blu. Turn up LOUD. 3)"Baraka"- The scene of the tree falling in the rain forest. LFE Holy Grail. 4) "The Golden Compass"- When the bear tears thru the town to go get his armor back and the following showing of Armor Bear ferocity.

Going Back to the original question about surround demos,
are the any other films that demo sound like Master and Commander By that i mean sound that is all around you that puts you into the environment of the movie rather than just loud explosions etc.

I use Tron Legacy to demo mine.
The sound is superb and the IMAX scenes are amazing. Obviously Avatar is a cracker too.. I've also got the Big Screen IMAX edition of ROTF but I've yet to watch it.. |

Haven't "demo'd" my setup in a few years. That's partially due to getting older and not making as much time for friends to hang over. And also due to the fact that none of the people in my circle give a rat's patoot about home theater and remind me how much money I'm wasting on movies "you can download for free."
