Way too many films by WB not even released yet (example Hooper) to worry about a better presentation of a film that (I personally like) but was a bomb in 1981 and only found it's audience through cable TV in the early 80's.

I love Excalibur. One of my all-time favorites. But it is time to face facts...WB will only due the bare minimum, because this title doesn't make them much money. You think they care? Look at some of their "classics" on blu that make them money, yet they still rerelease the same pre-2006 masters and lossy audio versions of those films.
Release the Permium Collection digibook that Eurpoe got, and I'd wager this would be a pretty decent seller.

It was a bomb? It made $34,967,437 domestic.

This needs to happen. This film is such a classic and it got a sorry first release on blu. I'll buy a proper restoration in a heartbeat.

It's exactly the same around the world as far as PQ and AQ goes. Maybe one day we will get a new master in the proper ratio of 1.66:1.

Ok bomb was a little harsh but take a look at my example. Hooper 78 Million dollars, at the height of Burt Reynolds popularity right after Smokey and the Bandit. Yet we have not even seen a "Widsescreen 16x9" DVD release let alone a BD release. I think what we have with Excalibur is fine until other catalog films can at least see the light of day. That's all I was sayin...

Thank you, then no need to grab that Digibook, I will just stick with my US version until something better.

Thanks again

No problem, but I wouldn't hold my breath since this is Warner.

I picked this up at Best Buy today for $4 after getting $2 back on a price match for The Revenant.

Haven't seen it since the 80s when I was a kid.

Is it actually a good film?

Is the blu-ray transfer terrible?

Seems to be a lot of split opinions about it in the critics community.

...I thought it might be a good flick to pop in tonight after the Game of Thrones premiere.

Is it a good film? well, opinion. Personally I love this movie. Frickin' classic. however, it might seem a bit goofy by today's standards. To me - EPIC. The transfer is decent/good. I love the genre so it's easy for me to like it! anyway, lucky you since you practically got it for free.

It's one of my favorite films ever. I saw it when it first came out and have continued to love it thought the years. It deserves a much better transfer.

Regardless, I would still love it if Koch Media in Germany would release a mediabook with the original poster art (similar to their FLESH + BLOOD mediabook release):

Well...wow.

Not exactly the movie I was expecting.

Honestly it felt like Conan The Barbarian set in Camelot.

Sounded like most of the dialogue was dubbed...and not particularly well.

A lot of the lines from the guy who plays Arthur sound shockingly bad imo.

And the transfer...my god.

I could mistaken, but it twood appear that this film has been badly cropped.

Oh well...only cost me $4.

It's possible the transfer is cropped from the 1.66:1 many think it should be, but otherwise I think it's likely accurate to the way the film was shot. Keep in mind the movie was done on a low budget, had lots of location shooting, lots of optical effects, and shot with a rather soft focus.

This movie is amazing. Operatic, even. I wrote a user review for this site if anyone wants to know how highly I esteem it. Unlike most fans who I imagine grew up with this movie, I discovered it on cable for the first time in the early 2000s when I was in middle school. I'm seriously considering watching it again right now.

That's a good way to put - it's Opera but without the awful singing.

Great movie.

I remember seeing it in the theater on first release. The moment it cuts to the wedding scene there was a gasp in the audience over how beautiful it was.

It's a shame really how pressured for time the director (John Boorman) was in delivering a final edit for WB. The film was shot in Ireland, where the director lives, edited there as well. Although the film was advertised, in the trailer, as being in Dolby Stereo it wasn't. There wasn't enough time for the final mix to be completed so it was released in MONO. For the previously released DVD a quick re-mix using some actual stereo tracks and fake ones was quickly put together.
In fact, the version released isn't even the complete film. There's some more footage that was left out - one scene where Guinevere is taken by Huns and Lancelot saves her.
I love the film and it is gorgeous to look at.
I became friendly with the director and admire his other films, Zardoz Deliverance, Exorcist II: The Heretic and Hope and Glory.
As with THE HERETIC I would love for WB to revisited EXCALIBUR with a re-master.

Great movie.
I don't think it's a particularly well made film myself.

Not very well written, some of the dialogue is pretty bad...as well as the acting.

And the narrative is pretty poorly constructed imo.

It just skips around from thing to thing to thing without really taking the time to delve more than two inches deep into anything.

There were several times when I couldn't even figure out what the heck was going on.

And the dubbing is just awful in places. If you're going to dub over dialogue in post production, at least do it so it sounds somewhat natural.

It does look great.

And there's some hot ladies.

...I'll give it that.
