I didn't see any comments in the thread, but thought I'd address it as both reviews indicate that there is a running time discrepancy between the "Restored" and "Raw" versions of the film, with the "Restored" version running approximately one minute longer.

From the blu-ray.com review:

From the dvdbeaver.com review:

The difference in running time between the two versions appears to be attributable to the Kino / Holland Releasing / United Artists company credits that precede the start of the movie and restoration / authoring credits that follow the end of the movie on the "Restored" version. These credits are absent on the "Raw" version and appear to have a total duration of about one minute.

There is no footage missing from the "Raw" version.

I'm fascinated by reading the differences between the raw and 'remastered' versions of this release. Public domain releases like this one are such a blessing over the various vhs and dvd versions which have existed for so long. Props again to Kino for a such quality release.

VCI just announced on their Facebook Page (VCI classic films)
That they are also doing White Zombie :

We are about to announce the release of a Blu-ray of WHITE ZOMBIE, which we are doing in partnership with movie archivist, Cary Roan, who just completed a spectacular restoration, and should hopefully prove to be the ‘definitive version’ of this genre classic. Also we will be announcing very shortly, the release of our first Blu-ray serial, CAPTAIN AMERICA. WHITE ZOMBIE will be released on September 10th, and CAPTAIN AMERICA on October 1st. Stay tuned for more to come!

wow, that's quite the news right there.
I've wondered if Roan was ever going to get involved with bd releases.

Great news! If anyone was curious, the 'restored' version looks just as horrible and scrubbed in motion as it does in those caps. I only endured it to listen to the commentary. Glad to know someone will be at least attempting to do it right this time.

The raw version looks good for what it is. There are two inserts from a brighter but much blurrier 16mm (or even video?) source and part of me found them so jarring I'd rather have a cut print of just the 35mm materials as an option.

The VCI version has been pushed waaaaaaaaaaay back until May 2014

Thats a blessing for me. If the Blu Ray from And Then There Were None is a travesty as rumored then I cant be too sure about White Zombie either

I think, if I'm not mistaken, White Zombie will be my first blu-ray double dip. And close together in time (just a little more than a year apart)

Last night, I watched the "raw" version of White Zombie on my Kino Blu-ray, and then watched the scrubbed main feature version just to listen to the commentary track.

The "raw" unfiltered version of White Zombie, which is included as an extra on this disc, works pretty well for me. There's some print damage on this raw version, and there are a couple of sequences in 16mm that look rather jarring compared to the rest of the film, but this presentation is still way better than any previous presentation of this movie that I've seen on DVD.

There are actually a few scenes that look fantastic on the raw presentation, namely a close-up of Bela Lugosi toward the end, and several scenes toward the end.

It's a shame that the raw version is only included as an extra and not as the main feature, but most casual viewers probably prefer the version that was manipulated by the digital elves. I'm glad that those of us who grew up with this movie now have the filmic presentation of the raw version, though.

I understand that VCI has a Blu-ray of White Zombie that has corrected print damage without going overboard with the digital manipulation, but I'm content to consider the raw version on this Kino disc to be the definitive version under my roof.

White Zombie is such a fun, fast-paced, and surreal movie. I wish that more zombie films these days would revert to the mysticism aspects of the mythology, instead of describing zombie plagues as contagious infections.

I own the VCI disc, which I'm content with, but I'm extremely curious about the 'raw' version on the Kino disc. It sounds like 16mm parts are pretty jarring, but does anyone know how long the 16mm portions last?

I really like the film, but I'm just wondering if its really worth a double-dip.
Hey kid, wanna make ten bucks?

I thought the raw version was pretty unwatchable. It's very dark, extremely grainy, and has a lot of dropouts and splices, including some missing dialogue.

I wish the VCI version had better contrast/blacks. The Kino versions do, but one version is scrubbed to death and the other is beat to death, so the VCI is an easy winner.

I see. . . I guess if I can ever nab the Kino for around $10 bucks, I'll get it for curiosity's sake.

When it comes to White Zombie on Blu-ray, there are no winners. Unfortunately, I don't see anyone in the UK tackling it, so VCI it is.
