I didn't think it was gimmicky I thought it was very well done. The only thing that didn't work for me was the fake grass. I'd have just preferred a better handling of the grain and the PQ was a bit of a letdown.

It's sad that the condition of the picture source is influencing judgment on the excellent 3D conversion work done for this film.

Okay, okay, okay, "gimmicky" was perhaps the wrong word. But, to me, it always felt like it was trying too hard and that kind of lessened the impact of it, if that makes sense. I was so fatigued by the duff stuff that the good shots just washed over me, to the point where I stopped caring about the 3D altogether. The genius of the Titanic conversion was that Cameron knew exactly what to bring up and what to push back, paying attention to every facet of the frame.

They even had the original director of photography from the movie when doing the 3D conversions I believe. This was one of the best, if not the best, 3D movies I've seen in a long while. And to say that for a post-converted movie is awesome. They've come a long way since the days where post-conversion was given a bad name.
The 3D was Great! The colour grading too!

A transfer which should preserve the original colour timing, the original framing (composition), The original DTS track! The Deleted Scenes, and you have the Perfect JP home-video version, that every fan would like to have!
Is it too much too ask? Maybe, because its Universal!

They are 2 totally different kinds of films. One is action suspence and the other a period drama. Both conversions worked perfectly for the material in each.

The 4k release will surely come later. They've killed 2 birds with one stone with this doing the restoration then the 3D conversion, so there is no way the remaster won't be released once the 3D versions sales decrease
