AKA the non-anamorphic Laserdisc master used for the 1996 THX-Laserdisc. They ported that master over on the first DVD Release in 1999 (Trilogy Boxset).

Exactly right, those THX LD transfers for 1 and 2 were orangey as ****, and even the BD versions still carry a slightly warmer cast whereas the remastered DCP of DH1 I saw last year had a more neutral look, with pinker skin tones and more vibrant reds and blues.

It's the middle one of the three screenshots.

I sure as hell won't be buying the THX-Laserdisc or the first pressing of the DVD which has the LD transfer ported over that's for sure. The colours for that LD non-anamorphic print are even warmer and flatter then the BD, and combined with the low resolution, it really has no redeeming factors whats so ever. Thanks for the heads up.

To be honest I didn't notice much of a issue with the BD of Die Hard, it looked pretty solid to my eyes but no doubt that DCP you saw was much improved. Die Hard 3 could look a lot better as well yes, but even so I don't have a issue with that BD either, but I know a lot of people do. I just simply hate the BD of Die Hard 2 so much. It's easily the worst of the 3 transfers to BD simply because of the colours which stick out like a sore thumb compared to the others.

Actually, it was hardest to tell with Die Hard. The Blu-ray looks decent and when you're watching it in a theater, you don't necessarily know about the real nuances of the image, like the grain structure or whether the depth of the image is just how big it is vs. the image actually being better. One of the only reasons I knew it was the improved DCP is I had seen a DCP of it in mid-to-late 2012, and noticed aliasing on the credits, which was now gone.

The three original films were each more visibly improved than the last. The colors in Die Hard With a Vengeance really popped and all that harshness was replaced by pleasing, natural-looking detail.

One of the benefits of the first pressing DVD is the sound mix. From memory there is a 2 channel stereo mix along with the 5.1 mix, and the 2 channel stereo mix has really great dynamic range throughout. Again, it might be sourced from the LD, which would explain the difference.

I ordered a deal of the day bundle, so not the same thing I guess. I'd give it true 50/50 odds based on my Amazon experience. Sometimes they're specific, sometimes they lump editions together. If you get the wrong cover though I am sure Amazon will let you return it. Then you could go to eBay to find the specific version you're looking for.

There's also a 2 disc version. The 1 disc with alternate cover is not available. I don't remember there being a new release 1 disc version. Only this

The reissue comes with a DVD version, so that's probably the "2 disc" part of it.

Yeah. So the one disc copy doesn't exist. Is yours a 2 disc with the new cover?

Yeah, it's the new cover with the DVD. Worth mentioning the new cover of Life Free or Die Hard comes with the unrated version on DVD as well. The original copy on has the theatrical.

HDNET is playing the 1st 3 Die hards tonight and then throughout the month. This channel plays films in HD, commercial-free, and in the original aspect ratio.

I wonder if the newer transfers will be played.

As I've mentioned, it's far easier to tell on 2 and 3. The first one looked mostly the same. Colors might've been better. I just knew because the aliasing I had seen on the credits (which wouldn't be apparent on TV vs. a movie screen) was gone. So, if anyone's trying to figure it out, check out 2 and 3.

I'm glad I picked up the 25th Anniversary Collection (below) with the book style packaging (similar to the Indiana Jones Collection). It was $19.99 at the time too.
