Wasn't part 3 originally gonna be directed by Sly Stallone? I heard he was also gonna star in it alongside Travolta and it was gonna be made in 1983. Sly opted to do a different sequel with Travolta instead...

I think there were something like a dozen different part threes floated before Coppola made his.

These transfers still look good considering their age?

Been considering picking up the three. Have only seen the first two quite a while back and have yet to see the third film.

Yes, they look excellent all things considered, but keep in mind there was also some original negative damage and these movies are not going to look like Avatar.

I don't care what people say, The Godfather part III is a good movie. Not as great as the first two, but still a good, satisfying conclusion to the Corleone saga.

I will defend part III until my last days.

I agree. Aside from the casting nepotism, Godfather III is a fine film. Its only real crime is that it had to come after Godfather and Godfather Part II.

Replacement nepotism. Replacement.

Winona Ryder was the one actually cast in the role.

Another interesting trivia factoid is that Francis Ford Coppola originally intended to title his third film The Death of Michael Corleone, but the studio pretty much insisted upon the "The Godfather, Part III" instead. Had Coppola won that battle, the expectations for (and reception of) that movie might've been substantially different, being set in the same universe, but not necessarily intended as a sequel of the same order of magnitude as the titanic, near-untouchable (fairly or unfairly) Part II.

Personally I think Part 3 is a terrible film. Part 1 and 2 are the 2 greatest films ever made in my book and it ended just perfect with part 2. Part 3 was an unnecessary money grab. We're just thrown right back in the mix with the Corleone family all of the sudden after 16 years, Robert Duvall is sorely missed and not only that but replaced by a perfectly tan and awful George Hamilton, Sofia Coppola and Andy Garcia are bad, Ford Coppola hadn't made a good movie since Apocalypse Now (The Outsiders was good but nowhere near 70s Coppola), Michael Corleone is now a wimp for some reason and not the same character at all and it looks and feels like a 90s movie. It doesn't have the artistic and authentic golden age look and feel of the first 2. The Vatican plot held no interest and that helicopter scene was really out of place. Part 3 is a bad movie. It takes away more than it gains. There's just nothing powerful about it at all unlike the first 2. I've always recommended to newcomers to strictly watch the first 2 and stay away from part 3 at all costs.

I agree. It was also nominated for Best Picture including 6 other Academy Awards. So it's strange when people call it a bad movie. It's just not a classic like the first 2 movies in the trilogy.

I actually want to give Cotton Club another shot. I watched about 30 minutes of it a few years ago and never finished it because I wasn't getting into it. The only other movie I liked that you mentioned was The Outsiders. I really wanted to like Bram Stoker's Dracula but I hated it. Personally I think Coppola used up his talent with the exhaustive Apocalypse Now shoot.
