If you rarely watch extras then no, it isn't worth the extra money for you.

Picked up the set for $44 and change from Best Buy today (price matched to Walmart), but each movie had half the spindles broken into pieces. Going to have to exchange it tomorrow, hope they'll not put up a fight

HD is impossible. They are natively filmed in SD resolution.

Pity. You'd think that as much as Jackson is into those things that it would've been planned for.

This was literally just before the HD craze began. So, the equipment that would have been necessary to do so would have been nearly as expensive as the equipment used to film the actual product itself. There is no way that Warner would have funded that.

It'll be interesting to see what features accompany The Hobbit box set and if they've made the jump.

EDIT : So right about those King Kong features. Bummer.

I have a stupid question but i can't seem to find the answer, and I'm going to be that annoying guy that doesn't want to dig through 500+ pages of this thread. So: does the extended edition allow you to play the theatrical versions? I never read the books, not the biggest fan of these films but saw them once and liked them.. I would just like the option to play both.

Thanks for any info in advance.

Not a stupid question, but no, the Extended and Theatrical versions are completely separate releases.

Kind of a bummer, seems like a cash grab to get people to double dip who want both versions. It would have been easy to include a way to play the theatrical version with the extra scenes cut out. I was gonna pull the trigger for the trilogy at the amazon sale price, I think I'll hold off though.

Thanks for the info!

No worries, mate.

I hear what you say, but I think the reason is technical as much as anything. In the case of the first movie in the trilogy, at least, the two cuts are completely different transfers, with nothing in common. But also, in numerous places throughout the trilogy Jackson used different takes of certain scenes for the Extended cuts, and (or so I've read) different edits or even completely different audio cues for the score. So even with two discs for each film of the Extended cuts, there may not have been enough space on the discs to branch the two versions and still retain a high bitrate.

But who knows what might happen when the Hobbit films are all out. Everyone assumes there'll be some kind of re-release of the LotR films. By that point, you'd think it would make sense to have a set with both versions. It happened with the DVDs.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but LOTR was released on DVD with both the theatrical and extended editions on the same disc with seamless branching used. This is found in the Limited Edition releases, like this one here:

They are 2 sided, but each side has the theatrical and extended on it. They're only flippers to cut down the amount of discs for the set. If the trilogy was spread out, it would be 6 discs, the same as the extended only releases.
