I currently have a 106" Grey .08 Gain Elite Screens projector screen. I have been reading articles about different types of screens and when to use them. It seems the census is that you should use a Grey screen when you have a low contrast projector (under 2000:1 contrast) my current projector is 10000:1 contrast.
What I want is the brightest colors that pop off the screen. Should I change to a 106" white 1.1 gain? Will I notice a difference in the colors? Any help is appreciated. Here is my setup. Room is 16X18 I have total control of ambient light. I can make the room completely black Dark wall where screen is and a black ceiling. Epson 720p Projector with 10000:1 contrast Seating is about 12' from the screen. Thanks

I'd like to have a more recent take on this then 2004, as I'm strongly considering a gray screen now for my finished room. There's one basement window that can be blocked but I DO prefer to watch movies/sports with some ambient light on so is a gray screen at .8 gain a better option than a 1.2 white screen using an Epson 8350?

Its best to get material samples & decide for yourself but when I did it I couldn't deal with the skewed color pallet of the gray "high contrast" materials. I sometimes have a small lamp (20w) on my end table on if I'm eating or something. I use a 1.4 gain brilliant white screen. As long as you can minimize the light directly hitting the screen and the lamp is a good distance from the screen its not too bad. Certainly watchable but better without the light.
