Anyone know if leaving my ps3 on pause for long times will damage it?

Why would you want to? PS3 remembers where you left off in movies.

No, it won't. The screen saver goes to a dimmed screen (depending on your settings I think), and I had it like that all day long (10 hours). No problems to report. I had to leave and just pressed pause, as I was getting inconsistent results when I'd shut the system down, hoping it'd pick up where it left off, but just loaded everything back to the beginning of the disc.

For awhile, it wasn't picking up where I'd power down the movie at, but probably with the latest updates, it's been more reliable. I usually just press power, not quit or anything like that. Then it cycles the fan for about literally four minutes an finally shuts off. My 360 console would shut off instantly, then pick up the movie right where it left off.

360's onscreen options were much better also. You had more variations of what you could do, like cropping the screen, adjusting size, zooming, etc. Just wish Sony had better programmers when they designed the PS3 interface, which is lacking IMO. But still PS3 (slim ver) is way more reliable than the original 360 ever was.

Black Ops II 3D, and Assassin's Creed III 3D, anyone try them, and how's the 3D?

I might add on the PS3 (slim) 3D Blu-rays that have DTS – Master audio 5.1 or 7.1 can be bitstreamed to your reciever to be decoded or be decoded by the PS3 to output either 5.1 or 7.1 LPCM (the number of channels mirroring whether the source material is 5.1 or 7.1) This will indeed maintain the lossless audio quality of the DTS-Master audio and merely output it as LPCM instead of the native DTS-Master audio Bitstream that your A/V receiver decodes. The lossless DTS-Master audio will be converted to lossless LPCM. (This is of course assuming that in the BD audio settings under "VIDEO SETTINGS" and then "BD/DVD - Audio Output Format (HDMI)" is selected to Linear PCM (converted) output not to Bitstream (native disc audio encoding stream) output.

3D Blu-rays that have Dolby TrueHD audio CANNOT be decoded by the PS3(slim)or (fat) into lossless LPCM. (nor can it be bitsteamed) On these Dolby TrueHD 3D Blu-rays the PS3 can only process the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 core of the Dolby TrueHD audio. It then either bitstreams the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 core to your AV receiver (depending on the above mentioned output setting) or it takes the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and coverts it to lossy LPCM 5.1 audio. There is no upconvertion to lossless audio. It is merely a LPCM 5.1 representation of the lossy dolby Digital 5.1. There is no 7.1 LPCM audio derived from a 7.1 Dolby True HD audio track. The extra channels are lost in the PS3’s inability to process anything beyond the Dolby TrueHD’s 5.1 Dolby Digital core on 3D Blu-rays.

To recap, there is no lossless audio for 3D Blu-rays that have Dolby TrueHD audio. There is also no 7.1 audio on any 3D Blu-ray with Dolby TrueHD audio. Regardless of the output being Bitstream (native) or LPCM (converted), any 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio on any 3D blu-ray disc will only be heard as lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital using a Playstation 3 console.

So it is not just an issue of lossless vs. lossy, it is a matter of loosing 2 channels of audio and never being able to hear or enjoy a 7.1 recording if the disc’s audio is encoded with Dolby TrueHD.

The PS3 (fat) is unable to decode ANY lossless audio on 3D Blu-rays. Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master audio on the PS3 (fat) will only be output as lossy dolby digital 5.1 or lossy DTS 5.1 audio.

I wrote to Dolby to see what their take on the Playstation 3 NOT being able to play DolbyTrueHD was and this was the response.

Hi ......-

Thank you for your email. The Sony PlayStation 3 was one of the first Blu-ray players to offer lossless Dolby TrueHD playback for Blu-ray content. As you have noted, the Sony PS3 does not support Dolby TrueHD audio for playback on 3D titles. This is not an issue on Sony’s other Blu-ray players. Dolby has encouraged Sony to do a firmware update to enable TrueHD functionality on 3D titles. If you have any additional questions we recommend contacting Sony.

Best-

The Dolby Game Team

Sony needs to develope that firmware update!

Not just 3D gaming.
My concerns have lately been:
No new 3D capable laptops announced.
Microsoft Windows 8 doesn't support Blu-ray or BD-3D natively as Windows 7 did, and now you have to go through a third-party for software to run it.

Although, 3D seems to be doing well at the movies and later for home use.

I'm planning to buy a couple of the PS3 3D rechargeable glasses which cost $20 less than the Sony rechargeable 3D glasses. Do these 3D glasses work as well for 3D movie viewing or are they mainly for the 3D games? Thanks.

I have a Sony TV too. Was going to get the Sony rechargeable 3D glasses from Best Buy for $49.99 and saw the PS3 3D glasses for $29.99, so wanted to know if if there was a difference in quality using these glasses for 3D gaming vs. 3D movie viewing. I'll buy them this weekend. Thanks!

The ps3 does lossless audio, just not Dolby TrueHD when playing 3D which is only on a few release's.

It plays DTS Master audio fine, playing 3D or not.

There's likely a difference but I bet it's marginal.

It can't play DolbyTrueHD in 3D mode, though most 3D titles are in DTS-HD(Transformers, Kung Fu Panda 2 are Dolby though).

If you think it's worth the money for "perfection" then go for it. It will be an upgrade.

But I still use my PS3 for 3D and everything looks great.

3D games aren't very good on the PS3. I suspect that will change with the PS4. PC is miles better for 3D games if that is something your are interested in.
