Just watched this again the other night. It's hard to rate but man, I absolutely love the score and cinematography. I can see myself watching it again and again just for that reason alone.

I agree to a point Todd.

I still love Drive but will never trust Winding Refn again - rental next time! I tried to watch OGF a second time and got so annoyed after 20 minutes I switched it off. And I managed to sell my copy at last last week so I wont be tempted to try and watch it again luckily. The karaoke scenes were the last straw - the film is barely 90 minutes long and yet we get 10 minutes (feels like hours!) of awful karaoke...honestly...

OGF is so empty. Theres no story and no script. People can read into it what they like but its meaningless to me. I think the director is actually trying to annoy Gosling/Drive fans with OGF and hes certainly succeeded for me. The soundtrack is good but its nothing on Drive. The visuals are great but they have no substance whatsoever. It feels like a video installation - a very expensive video installation to which they tried to add some semblance of meaning and plot.

I liked OGF but will say. It doesn't hold up to Drive or Vahalla Rising. Picked up a cheap copy a few weeks ago. I'll rewatch it just not as often as Drive.

I quite liked Valhalla Rising. And I liked Bronson quite a bit too mainly thanks to Tom Hardy's performance.

Definetly on both points. Hardy did a good job in it, has a very interesting story too. Valhalla Rising when I watched it I couldn't stop thinking about it. Finally found a copy of it on blu.

I hated Bronson. Couldn't finish it. The constant mugging to the camera really irritated me.

Has anyone who hadn't seen this film before BR seen it since?

I never really liked Gosling but a 3rd rewatch of Pines and thoroughly enjoying BR 2049 made me check this out.

I disliked Drive which I thought tried too hard to go after the tumblr / hipster crowd. The soundtrack especially was infuriating. I do like the intro though.

This seems more like a bona fide atempt at an art film. I found it easier on the eyes amd ears. But thats about it.

Refn certainly knows how to shoot a corridor, but outside of that there is nothing too gripping here. I think where the style was straight forward for this type of film, it worked. Nothing too flashy. Whatever substance Refn intended however was lost in all the long and slow shots of corridors and people gazing into the camera.

I don't see how it was booed or claimed a "defecation". That honor goes to Neon Demon.

I adore The Neon Demon. Some of the shots and sequences in that film are just stunning and utterly beautiful.

The cast was excellent across the board, especially Elle Fanning and Jena Malone. The music was great. And it's just such a bizarre story! Great ending.
"First, a brief preface. Every time I review a film by Jean-Luc Godard, I receive outraged letters from readers who hated it. It is suggested that my reviews and myself join Godard on the trash heap of history; that the customers wuz robbed. A common complaint is that Godard 'made no sense.' And so on." -- Roger Ebert (1966)

I really need to stop dawdling and just buy the best edition of Neon Demon. Only saw it once, in Italian, and its sights and sounds have stuck with me. Especially that first club scene. Elle Fanning is gorgeous. Poor Dakota! My friends emerged from that film retching, much to my amusement.

On the topic of Only God Forgives, it not an easy movie to access in regards to storytelling compared to a more linear plot. Here, things are very symbolic and abstract, to the point that it's not easy to know what the point of the film is for many I'd imagine, compared to a more accessible and immediately entertaining film like Drive, also starring Gosling.

While I can see the artistic style of this film, it's not a film for me, and was made with others in mind. Had there been a clear story from the start, that would have let me get on board with the characters faster, like Goodfellas or something like that. Gosling hardly says a word in this film, so a lot of audience interpretation is required as to what might be happening. At least that was my impression of the film, and it's no doubt a film that requires multiple viewings to better enjoy.

Drive is still a favorite movie of mine.

Neon Demon is just like the industry it's about: pretty but vapid. If that makes it brilliant, then sure.

I like this movie better than Drive. It's vintage NWR. Drive looked and sounded cool, but the story was quite shit. Terrible overacting by Ron Perlman too. I think Drive is his most accessible movie to date. People disappointed with OGF and TND probably didn't see any of his movies before Drive. Pusher, Fear X and Valhalla Rising all bear the same traits as his last two movies.

That's true, I only saw Drive, then watched this one years later, hoping for more of the Drive style, so my expectations definitely affected my enjoyment, though I did hear this was an abstract film prior to seeing it.
Drive was not a perfect story, and there were some questionable decisions made by Gosling's character, especially the end. He was way too trusting of the criminals IMO and it cost him.

I would be interested in seeing the style of Refn's other films.

Ron Pearlman with terrible overacting? I thought he was entertaining in that role as a mafia boss. Albert Brooks was believable also. The part where Ron Pearlman is on the phone, saying to the Driver, something like "you're not too good at this, are ya?", that was a well delivered and believable line.

What's interesting is, I don't think Gosling's character is ever given a name in the film Drive. But that's another topic.

I imagine Only God Forgives was meant to appeal to only a specific audience, and definitely not a mainstream audience.

Valhalla Rising sat on my shelf for a couple years before I watched it, expecting something like 300. It's not, it's a very slow, slow film which you have to be in the mood for. I wouldn't call it unstylish and boring, but I was running on fumes by the end. No rush to watch it again.

Drive is one of my top 20 films. Amazing film that Albert Brooks got screwed out of an Oscar win let alone a nomination. I also love Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon. I saw Only God Forgives twice on its opening day but had to drive (no pun intended) a ways to see it due to it's extremely limited release. I couldn't and still can't believe all of the negative reception it got. It's a fantastic film with one of the strongest and most effective atmosphere's from any film I've seen. I get that it's not a mainstream film but the negative reception was ridiculous. Gosling is also an extremely underrated actor. He can convey so much inner emotion, turmoil and conflict with a complete stoic stone face than any other actor.

This one dropped back on my radar thanks to VUDU freebies. Watched a trailer and think I'd like to check it out when I have time. I've always like Gosling, especially in Lars and the Real Woman. So I think he has more range than some of the roles he's had in the past. Plus, I kind of think is a hottie.

What about Shannon? Fassbender? Its easy to admire the tortured soul archetype but Gosling really isn't that great at it compared to others.
