It does drag in places but is overall a different take on a WW2 movie.

Spoiler: The kid really did see the flash of the Nagasaki atomic bomb from far away Shanghai. He's quoted in at least two WW2 historian's books.

One of the best deals you'll ever make!! One of the best films of the last two decades of the 20th century. One of Spielberg's very, very best. And the towering performance of a film-debuting 13-yr-old named Christian Bale-- carrying a 2 hour 45 minute epic film on his very capable back.

Hell, I'll say you got the best deal of the month!!!!!

http://www.amazon.com/Empire-Sun-Blu...dp/B007KW5N9Y/

The Amazon listing for the BD currently has text saying:

"Region 40443 encoding (This DVD will not play on most DVD players sold in the US or Canada [Region 1]. This item requires a region specific or multi-region DVD player and compatible TV."

Does anyone know what's up with this? I had to explain to someone at a film score board I visit that this was nonsense, that the disc will play fine on American machines.

Amazon puts that wording up on some releases, for whatever reason. It is just nonsense.

I've submitted the change to Amazon, let's see if they accept it

A complete and expanded soundtrack 2-disc set for EMPIRE OF THE SUN just went on sale at La-La-Land Records. Limited to 4000 copies, the set includes the complete film score plus a second disc of alternate unused tracks.

I snapped it up immediately.

Here's the link:

One of the very few Spielberg films I've never seen until now. This movie is goddamn masterpiece. And now, I have to wonder for the rest of my life if I would have disliked it like seemingly everyone else if I had first watched it back in '87.
In 2007, I bought a PS3 for 4 specific titles; in 2̶0̶1̶4̶ ̶2̶0̶1̶5̶ 2016 the other half of them may finally come out for PS4.

It's impossible. It's one of the reasons why Spielberg felt the memories were false -- true in one sense, but false in reality. He described the book as a blend of memories, some of which were true, some of which were imagined. That's how he shot the movie and a whole lot of people didn't get it in 1987. I was a teenager, I went to that empty theater three times trying to figure that movie out, and it wasn't until CBS aired "The China Odyssey" and Spielberg sat with Malkovich and young Christian Bale and talked about how he felt about the novel that the whole thing finally clicked...

No, J.G, Ballard did not see the light flash from the Nagasaki atomic blast from the abandoned stadium in mainland China. I got together with the science professors at the University of the Incarnate Word the first time I gave my lecture on Empire of the Sun, and we agreed on this -- Due to the curvature of the Earth, and where Jim was, and where the bomb exploded, Jim had to have been on a platform 22 miles high to see the explosion. It's a false memory.
