I bought a Panasonic DMP-BD60 back in May '09 for $221.54. It's still going strong to this day.

Me too! $645 in October of 2007. Returned it within a month and got a PS3 instead.

Samsung BD-E5400 for $70 at Best Buy a month ago.

It works amazingly well so far, although I no way to compare it to others.

Samsung BD-P1400 in July of '08 on eBay for around $185. The newer model had just come out and someone had dozens of those things to get rid of. Worked well for me until I got a PS3 in October of 2010. I gave it to my parents, who used it up until this past Black Friday when I picked them up a cheap LG at Wal-Mart. The Samsung was having a harder and harder time playing new titles (specifically Universal and Fox), and I had grown tired of constantly upgrading and downgrading the firmware to force it to work.

Default Logik DV 9400BR blu-ray player R700

Hi, newbie to this forum and to blu-ray. Appears I cannot start a new thread so I have to post in an existing thread, sorry about that. My first blu-ray players was a cheap Logik Blu-ray player from a store called GAME in South Africa, 18 months ago. I paid R700 which is about 50 or 60 pounds sterling. And now I regret that purchase. Never had any blu-ray discs so I've only ever used it to play normal DVD's, no problem at all with those. Recently I bought my first couple of blu-ray discs and they don't play at all. Player freezes with counter on 0:00:00 and nothing happens. It's connected via HDMI to a full HD TV, and I have the resolution set to "auto". I've tried every possible setting on the player but nothing will make it work. Another blu-ray disk plays the intro scene only, gets to the main menu but as soon as I press "play movie" it freezes again on 0:00:00 and I have to power off eventually and reboot to get the disk out (no buttons on the remote work once it freezes). Am I doing something wrong or did I just buy a piece of junk? Now I wish I'd tried out some blu-ray disks sooner, while it was still under warranty, coz i think it's only a 12 month warranty from GAME. And only after browsing this forum do I realise how fussy and jittery blu-ray can be, with playback hanging or freezing, etc. I thought it was straightforward, like regular DVD. Sadly I'm not the kind of techie who wants to get firmware upgrades and what not. I want to buy a player, plug it in and it must work. No updates and upgrades and downloads and whatever. Sorry for my long first post and hijacking this thread to get my call for help out there.
Richard

Richard, unfortunately it sounds like you purchased a piece of junk. Guess you could say that the old phrase "you get what you pay for" applies here. These off brands aren't know for providing the necessary updates and when/if they do it's at a snails pace. My recommendation would be to look for a more brand named player such as Sony, Pioneer, etc. Even these manufacurers offer lower/cheaper models but provide much better support when it comes to updates and compatibility.

Every player is going to require firmware upgrades at some point. Studios are constantly going to come out with new security software on the movies that are going to cause problems with playback. Even the most expensive bluray players will require firmware upgrades.

PS3, 80GB "fat" model, came with MGS4, probably around $500.

Unfortunately, the thing broke on me and I was unable to fix it (accidentally dropped it on a hard stone floor while moving it). Had to replace it for a PS3 slim, but I got the move bundle with it. That came out to $300 or so.

The only other player I ever bought was a region-free Panasonic player for $350.

All of them have been well worth it!

Since you need a third-party blu-ray drive in addition to your software to play blu-rays you really need to add the cost of the drive to your total cost.

I paid $399 for a 40 gb PS3 from Walmart back in 2008. It was on special and I got a $100 gift card back with it, and bought more Blu's with it. I later upgraded the HD to 500 gigs. I also have a Toshiba HD-A35 for HD DVD's purchased around the same time.

In 2010 I purchased a Sony BDS-360 from a guy on Craigslist for $100. It was still sealed in the box. I bricked it doing a firmware update and took it back to HH Gregg and they gave me a new one, as the original owner got it there. It's starting to show its age, and sometimes it will not boot a disc, so an upgrade is in my future.

I'm probably gonna bite the bullet and get the Oppo 103, and sell the PS3.
