Greed wasn't directed by Pabst, it was directed by Erich Von Stroheim! I caught it on TCM classic last summer and I was very impressed. Watching some of the stills where scenes used to be was pretty heartbreaking. How the studio messed with the original eight hour cut is maybe THE biggest crime against cinema.

Also, how incredible is the desert finale? WOW!

I have not seen the documentary yet, but I did go through the picture stills that try to recreate the film. Very interesting story; at that moment in time, Murnau was at his peak in film making. It is sad that we are missing one of his films.

And followed closely behind by the annihilation of Lang's Metropolis; cut from around 153 minutes to a meager 91 minutes. Luckily, after finding more footage in 2008, the recent versions have been much more complete (only missing around 5 minutes from the cut that premiered in 1927) than some of the other, ridiculous versions in circulation.
