Review of Easy Virtue (1927)

The 5th feature from Alfred Hitchcock is basically a dated melodrama from 1927. It has some creative camera shots and editing is inventive for it's day. Probably the least interesting of the 9 silents he made.

Picture quality is poor, because of the 16mm source prints available. It is a bit more stable and contrast is improved somewhat over previous DVD's. It has new titles (and forced French subtitles) and no soundtrack at all. There are scenes or bits missing here and there, so the running time is 67 minutes. The BFI did what they could, so unless a better print or negative is discovered it's the best we have. If this was Hitchcock's lost second film The Mountain Eagle I'd be thrilled to have it at all, so I can't complain. The extras are in French with no English subtitles, except the Early Hitchcock is in English, but this is the same feature I've got on several releases. Region B locked. My main complaints with this release are not including a musical score and the forced subtitles, both of which are inexcusable in this day and age. Hopefully, a better release will come eventually.
