I bought mine last year and I don't think I've played any of them (seen them so many times, can't remember).

But I would hope for another edition where the disks come in a single case, instead of this big boxed set on my shelf. I like to save space.

5-disc case + Custom cover = Problem solved

Bummer. Just purchased this at BB for $19.99

I think Beneath (aside from the original), has the most replay value for me for some reason.

Unfortunately, older firmware probably wouldn't help. The discs seem to be authored in a way that just isn't compatible with the hardware for these particular models for some reason. I have been able to play the 1st film on my BDP-S370 by playing around with the top menu button, but have not had similar luck on the other films in the series.

Yeah I don't think my problem with Battle is a firmware issue at all. I'm fine with watching them on my Philips, I just want to be able to watch all of them.

I just picked up another set from BB and disc 5 now behaves just like the other 4 discs in the set, which I'm fine with, as long as I can watch them in my Philips.

For owners of the 40 Year Evolution Set, I have been extremely careful removing the discs since I got the set when it was originally released and those damn rubbery disc hubs finally bit me. I have hairline cracks coming from the disc hole spreading into the playing surface about a quarter to half inch on two of the discs, rendering them unplayable. Removing the discs in this set has always been a hair-raising experience with the pulling and slight twisting needed to remove them. I have an email to Fox customer service about this issue and I am awaiting a response. My advice, if you haven't already done it, is to very carefully remove the discs and place them in another type of case for safe keeping.

Couldn't agree more. The rubber hubs simply suck. I put my set in a 5-disc case and printed a custom cover. Voilą!

The person who designed the box with rubber hubs needs their ass beaten.

Couldn't agree more I hated those rubbers stubs I modified my setup about a week after I got it. Took half a holder taped it to where it's supposed to go and wallah so much happier

I recently purchased a used Evolution set. These rubber hubs are crazy! The set I purchased is in awesome like new condition and all the discs were firmly seated on the rubber hubs upon opening. Once I took the discs out to inspect them I found it nearly mpossible to get them firmly back on the rubber hubs! I even tried saliva (ehh gross) on the hub which did help make the disc go on the hub so much easier, fitting it firmly on the hub, but then the saliva (ehh gross) ended up on the disc.

What you do is you place the disc's center hole over the rubber hub then you slowly twist the disc down and unto the hub. I've never had any trouble with it.

Damn good point. The worst packaging I've seen was for Sony's Sam Fuller box set. I scratched two discs and cracked the outer case wraparound because I didn't understand how to remove the discs properly.

Sorry in advance if this has already been asked & answered. However, I was curious if all the special features from the 2-disc "Behind the Planet of the Apes: Special Edition" DVD have been carried over to the box set? I see that the documentary seems to be included on the first disc, but wondering if the rest made it as well. Here's just some of those features:
  • The Planet of the Apes National Association of Theater Owners presentation (1967)
  • The Planet of the Apes featurette (1968)
  • Planet of the Apes Makeup Test with Edward G. Robinson (1966)
  • "A Look Behind The Planet of the Apes" (1972)
  • Behind the Planet of the Apes promo (1998)
  • The Planet of the Apes makeup test with Edward G. Robinson (1966)
  • Dailies and outtakes (1967)
  • Extensive unedited Roddy McDowall interview
and more

Can I safely retire the DVD, or do I need to hold onto it for anything? Thanks for the help gang!

As far as I know the McDowall interview remains exclusive to the Behind set. Everything except that is on the existing Planet Blu-ray. I'm not really sure off the top of my head if the trailers are all carried over. I know the CBS/Fox VHS Collection ad featured on the 2000 Evolution set is not on the Blu-rays (I think it's not on the Behind set but can't say for certain).

Thanks for the info kidglov3s! Looks like I'll be hanging onto the DVD special edition after all!
