Well, I'm not sure what exactly Moretz and Moore nailed, but whatever it was it wasn't their roles. Having read the book, a few times, I can honestly say that Spacek and Laurie embodied their characters more precisely. As far as the director of Boys Don't Cry, she imitated the direction of De Palma scene for scene, unsuccessfully. I remember reading an interview, wherein she admitted she asked De Palma how to effectively drop the bucket of pig's blood during the prom scene so that it would cover Moretz. In the end, she just ended up CGI-ing it.

This is true? Wow. Another addition to the endless reasons why I'll never watch that remake.

Wow that actually angers me. Replacing one of the most iconic bloodly scenes in horror history with cgi.
