It is an awesome film...Kurosawa is, imo, the best director ever and his techniques had been copied for decades by directors all over the world. Rashomon is considered among the best films of all time in just about any credible list of best films. I'll be watching my copy later today .

Just watched Rashomon and it look awesome...terrific. I have been thinking of how important Takashi Shimura was to the films of Akira Kurosawa. We see him in Rashomon as the woodcutter, but he had important roles in many Kurosawa films. I can remember his contributions in Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yohimbo, Sanjuro, Kagemusha and Ikuru.

Most of us associate Mifune with Kurosawa, but Shimura was just as important...one of the best Japanese actors ever (imo). Probably his role in Ikuru is considered to be his best work. However, my most beloved memories of the actor are due to his great portrayal of Kambei Shimada in Seven Samurai. Why did he seem to be a natural for the role? Well, Shimara was an actual decendant of the Samurai class . Please, please Criterion release Ikuru, Throne of Blood and The Hidden Fortress.

As was Tatsuya Nakadai. Without him, the Sanjuro films would have been less effective. He was also excellent in High & Low and of course in the latter masterpieces Kagemusha and Ran. And he did some great work with Masaki Kobayashi.

The famous arrow scene in Throne of Blood was a remarkably choreographed.

I bet if that were done today they would use CGI

Nakadai also played the voice of the phallic demon that seduces the heroine in the animated film The Tragedy of Belladonna (Kanashimi no Belladonna). If Criterion were to release animated films, I think that might be a good selection. It's at least as whacked out as Hausu.

This is a comparison of the 2002 DVD and the 2012 Blu-ray/DVD. The audio of the 2002 DVD has an extraordinary amount of hiss, relatively speaking.

Why is the title here (blu-ray.com) 'Rashômon' with a "ô" instead of 'Rashomon' like in everywhere else (including the release itself)?

Because it's the proper way of spelling it in Japanese

Everywhere?

Like MifuneFan writes, it's the original title.

It is a good question. This version has subtitles in many languages. Any review would be welcome.
