The ultra-wide aspect is very impressive, yep. It felt weird putting on Disc 2 and having the 'full screen' menu come up, it made my screen seem 3x as big after two and a bit hours of widescreen goodness.

I know people criticised QT for using UP70 on H8 which is apparently mostly dialogue scenes, but you can see the same 'stage like' use of the format in Ben-Hur. It's not just about chariot races and expansive vistas as there are several shots in the quieter scenes which go on for minutes at a time and you can really soak up the performances and sets.

This might be one of those rare times where it actually cost more then, than it would now. The scene is said to cost about $4 million to make, which is equivalent to about $33 million in today's money

Yep. I hate to stick the boot into CG because it's a terrific tool when handled correctly, but I don't think we'll see a chariot race on-screen that's as wonderfully real and visceral as that ever again. It's one of the most thrilling action scenes in all of cinema IMO and is still wince-inducing to this day.

I recently obtained the Diamond Luxe Edition, and briefly sampled the movie.

Wow, it is a great looking and sounding transfer.

The UCE looks nice but I'm tired of big box sets and swag. Was going to go for the standard 2-disc set in a keepcase but now I'm not sure if I should go for the 3-disc set in the UK. What are people's thoughts on the 1925 silent version?

Do you mean in terms of the quality of the film itself or of the transfer?

If the former, it is a marvelous epic--one of the classics of silent cinema if for nothing else than its scope, story, and of course the chariot scene.
If the latter, it's an SD transfer so the quality is limited. That said, it still looks significantly better than any previous versions that I've owned (Laserdisc, VHS, etc.).

I would definitely pick this up!

Thanks, I meant the movie, but it's nice to hear about the transfer quality too! Hmm, I really wanted to just go for the standard 2-disc for $10 (I think) at Walmart, but I feel I'll regret it now. I just don't like ratings logos on the front. Silly I know, another great movie is more important than packaging.
