Default Help: 7.2 Rear Speaker Question

Looking to pick the brains of some of the experts floating around here.

I'm 4 weeks away from moving into my newly built house and I need some advice on setting up my 7.2 home theatre system.

My main concern is the placement of my rear and rear surround speakers.

Should they be halfway up each wall or right at the top of each wall?

I own Mission 79 Series speakers...

These are the speakers I'll be using for rear and rear surround...

http://www.mission.co.uk/Product.asp...=11&Tab2=792SE

I'm going to be using some heavy duty speaker brackets to hold them cos they're big.

Also interested to know peoples thoughts on mounting them compared to putting them on stands...pros and cons?

I'v attached some pics of the room...look forward to reading your thoughts...

Personally, mount them on the wall 2-3 feet above your seated height, the R/L surrounds should be right to your sides, the R/L Backs I would put on either side of the window again 2-3 feet above your seated postion, pointed in just slightly, maybe 10 degrees. Get a heavy curtian for that window. I would keep your couch about 2-3 feet off the wall if you can.

You’re not kiddin, those are big, and they are just a tad bit smaller then my bookshelf speakers. Honestly I couldn't imagine sitting only 1 meter away from them, I would need much more.

I'm interested in what brackets you plan to use for them?

Since your speakers are so large, they should be place at the top and angled toward the listening area, they will give you a little more distance from sitting directly next to a speaker.

Hopefully you have some space from the rear wall. Depending where you place your seats, is where you place your sides.

Thanks guys.

Yep...I figured I'd mount them higher purely for aesthetic reasons but now that you mention the benefit of a little more distance it makes more sense.

These are the brackets I'll be using...

Does it matter that they'll be so close to the wall...or do they need some space at the back?

if they are front ported it will make less of a difference then if they are rear ported, if they are rear ported, then use the foam port plugs to control the bass, as the speakers could sound a bit boomy being too close to the wall.

Yep...they're rear ported.

There'll be some experimentation involved.

Thanks for your help everybody...exciting times ahead.

Will post pics of the finished product over the next few months.

Dude, those are some nice brackets ! !

As Callas has said, since they will be very close to the wall, you will want to plug the ports. I have my front speakers rear ported with them x-over at 60hz. Looking at the spec's on yours, you may want to set your x-overs to 80hz.

Come to think about, does your manual suggest plugging the rear port, if too close to a wall or in a cabinet?

Nope...the manual doesn't mention it.

They're currently head height on stands which are very close to the wall and the sound is top notch.

May be a different story in the new place.

Sorry to thread jack, but i figured instead of making a new thread, i would just ask my question here since it is in the same category.

Basically, i want to do 7.2. My rear sides will be in the corner of the room facing the listening position (they are Paradigm studio ADP590, the woofer would be facing me, the speaker is on a shelf). The way my room is, i cannot put anyt rears behind me, but i may be able to do in wall rears. Will this work ok? Basically, the rear sides will kind of be on the same wall as the rears. The side rears directed at listening position in the corner and the rears just straight also facing listening position.

Thanks for any adivce
