This is an exciting opportunity to experience how effective 3D technology can take never before seen live action film by transforming the experience via 3D illusion for display on current 3D systems. That will be a cool day when the TV set can properly convert a 2D image into 3D, with proper placement of the objects in dimensional space/distance. I personally don't think it'll happen any time soon.

March of the Wooden Toy Soldiers 3D could be good if it's well done and not an afterthought. Here's hoping they're going for a good 3D conversion and not a weak one. Strong 3D conversions are very time consuming, so here's hoping for "good". This is a great classic movie.

My opinion about auto-3d conversion is currently the same as yours. As a result from my trial experiences, it always has bad results.

At the present, human hours of talented input are needed for good-to-excellent 3D conversion.
People, objects, spaces, all have to be placed skillfully using human judgment, in appropriate areas, on variable naturally harmonic planes, and in bold manners.
Great strides are being done with CGI dominant films ala Titanic and the Avengers. Needed, is the time to be spent on old classic live-action films, the conversion to which the art is under the live action interval of development.

We as enthusiasts savor good results, but also harshly lambast 3D garbage attempts.

I think Titanic was a complete conversion. A report on the conversion studio I saw showed someone converting a SFX sequence the same as any other shot.

Hi , I really could not put it better than Paul did earlier and I will support studios that take the time and/or resources to do it properley as it can be done. Just like native is, its is an illusion and people need to get over their "conversion" issues..

Now as to the company, if its a Fox legacy (or classic) title it may be done by the folks at Paintfx.com using JVC tech that is being pioneered on I robot.

It may be getting done by Legend 3D who seem to specialise in converting legacy titles and have a business plan to do it whereby they cover some of the costs of conversion. (see upcoming Top Gun).

It was StereoD who did the bulk of the conversion on Titanic and it would not surprise to see them tapped again to do it. These seem like the main contenders to me.

The only other really major company is Prime Focus who seem to concentrate on new releases. Their are smaller companies that may be giving it go but I doubt it, such as Gener8 out of Vancouver or Venture 3D or Pixelmagic.

I think the Babes in Toyland rumors relate to this film, it's the alternate title for the movie. The 3D conversion has been done by Legend Films / Legend3D:

I've enjoyed their colorizations.

"Babes in Toyland" was the original announcement for MotWS (under its alternate 1931 title), because it was Public Domain, and there's hardly a PD title that ISN'T being set on by vultures at the moment.
(And possibly because of confusion/complaints from VCI also putting out a suitable Blu version.)

Nothing to do with Disney or Warner's thoroughly owned and anniversary-pimped Oz.

My daughter and son loved this flick when they were kids. I had this flick on VHS back then. I'm picking this one up for sure now. Maybe I will surprise the kids with it this Thanksgiving,lol.

Played Laurel & Hardy's "March of the Wooden Soldiers In 3D" this afternoon and I have to say that the 3D conversion is excellent. It really makes this movie watchable. I've had the 1999 release of the movie on DVD and I never could get through the whole film, but with 3D being so immersive, I actually enjoyed the incredible talents that created the comedy. Noticed plot details that never were obvious to me before when seeing it in 2D and it made me laugh at situations that I failed to see in the past. Didn't realize that the movie actually has some of the same song themes that are in the Disney's Babes In Toyland, that I loved as a kid. Now that I have this version in 3D it is going to be a part of film's early history that I won't be hesitant to view again.

When I compare this to the 3D conversions of "The Three Stooges in 3D" and "The Best Of The Little Rascals In 3D", I have to say Legend Films has done an equally great quality job to all three! They seem to really know what they are doing with 3D conversion, making these old public domain title restorations so special for today's audiences.

Thanks for the update Paul H. I have this movie in 2D (blu-ray) and I usually watch it on Thanksgiving. It's a wonderful classic in 2D and I am seriously considering the upgrade to 3D.

As we all know, Shrek is a collage of fairy tale characters, but it was first done in March of the Wooden Soldiers. Yes it is dated, but it's a great nostalgic and super fun family movie.
