Are there still no comparisons between the Criterion and the Best Buy release (that will have a general release 7/14)!?

It's featureless and the Criterion version looks amazing, so I can't imagine there's any competition.

You never know when a studio might decide to maximize bitrates (e.g. Super 8).

The Criterion version is the standard unless Eureka! decided to release something in comparison.

Since some people have zero interest in special features, that's not necessarily a point in Criterion's favour. I don't want to spend a fortune on their release if the Universal disc has the same video quality. I only care about the movie.

I don't think $22 is "a fortune" compared to $12, but fair enough. I would be wary though, Criterion do the remasters themselves, so Universal might have just ported the DVD master.

In Canada it's currently $43 vs $16 on Amazon.ca. Criterion discs sold in Canada must be made of solid gold or something.

I have the same problem with The Devil's Backbone, I wish a generic version would be released for that movie, too. I find it hard to justify $40+ for one movie when I've purchased so many for $5-10.

That's exactly why I'm so eager to hear about the Universal disc's video quality. I'm quite happy with their Dazed and Confused and their Fear and Loathing wasn't bad, either.
