I can't comment on that specific set, but the UK Series 1-4 releases (the only ones you really need to import) are region-free. However the SD special features are in PAL and will not play on those machines (unless your TV miraculously supports PAL).

Alright, so my box set arrived today from Spain. From what I can tell, it's the exact same as the English set. I tried the first disc of each series on a PS4/Vizio 3D HDTV.

I am very happy to say that series 1-7 & the specials work perfectly. Even the bonus features work!

It's kind of strange to me that series 5-7 will read aloud what the disc is upon loading: example- "Doctor Who Complete Series 6 Blu-ray Boxed Set, Disc 1". I accidentally started series 5 in audio navigation mode, so that was confusing, as I've never encountered a set-up like that before where before the menu loads it gives the option.

But overall, I'm really happy as it would've cost much more to buy the series sets individually.

The classic Who DVD's have that audio navigation thing on every single one. Never saw it on a UK BD though.

I wish I woulda jumped on this set when it came out. Wasn't much of a Who fan just yet. Now it's a show that brought me and my fiance closer together. It's always gonna be special to us. Shame you can't get this set for a reasonable price now. Ebay has alot of these but idk. Would love to find one new close to the price it was when it came out. Sry, but $1,300 on Amazon for this set is just ridiculous.

The Christmas special from this season was released as a stand alone item. Normally it's included in the next season's combined set but in 2016 the only new Who will be the 2016 Christmas special. Does that mean the 2015 special won't be on any season set? Should I get it separately or will they maybe put it on the combined set for this past season or even wait until after next season and out the 2015 and 2016 specials on it. What is everyone else doing with regard to buying the 2015 special?

You sure it won't have both? as the UK Series 9 set will include the 2014 and 2015 Xmas specials.

According to the BBC Video US press release, the US version of the S9 set is identical to the UK version, so it will include both Christmas specials.

The David Tennant Specials box set, should I get the UK set which is cheaper or should I go with the US version? I pretty much have it down that I am going to get the first 4 series from the UK and get the rest from here in the states. The Tennant box set is the only one I'm unsure about

It seems though that the UK set of the Specials now out of print other than from BBC Shop.

As it stands though the UK set is encoded with a 60i to 50i conversation, even though being a UK show it should taken from a 1080i50i master, rather than a conversation, so you might want to stick with the US set.

How do you know it is a 60i to 50i conversion?

I sold my 60i set recently...darnit.

Jezza, since you are an expert on all things Who, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Australian bluray releases of Season 1 through to 9? I ask because the BBC store has a 50% off sale at the moment here and I'm thinking about upgrading, but don't want to purchase inferior editions.

Do you know if the Australian releases contain the same special features as the US/UK?

Are the transfers acceptable from your knowledge, or compromised in quality?

Thanks.

At that MSRP I certainly don't regret importing.

Just to clarify, the UK Tennant Specials set is in fact in 60i (I have it), so the master is probably identical to the US version. I think the extras might be PAL 25fps though, I can't quite remember.

If $60 is the MSRP that puts them squarely in the $20 range during the December BN sale though which would be less than I paid for most any full season set DVD or BD.

Well I got the UK editions for like $18 a piece shipped, and that was right when they came out, so it worked out better for me. Everyone has a different situation though obviously.

Very good price on the UK sets -- assuming for those who haven't read your reviews that you have the ability to play all the bonus material (or if you care about the extras which some folks don't ever watch). I came close to ordering the set of 4 from BBC when they had that great deal going on but never convinced myself to pull the trigger -- loaded my cart with the discount codes more than one.

Unfortunately, I expect this set is still created from the the existing transfer/upscale that converted the show into an incorrect time-base.
