Default Captain America and Super 8 blu rays will not play on my player

Not sure where to discuss this, because I don't know if it's blu ray disc related or blu ray player related, but no matter how many times I try, Captain America blu ray disc and Super 8 (brand new, spotless) will not play on my brand new (Aug 2012) Sony BDV-F7 player. It freezes the whole unit and I have to power it off and start over. I can watch Super 8 in 5 minute intervals before it totally freezes up.

I've tried 2 different brand new copies of each. Same issue every time. So far, all other blu ray movies play perfectly for me.

Anyone else having this issue?

That's not a player model, but an audio system. What model is your player?

That's actually the model of the whole system. It's an all-in-one soundbar system:

It's a system, not just a soundbar. That is the model number. But thanks for playing..

So here's the obvious question - is your firmware up to date?

Do you have any other Paramount titles to test on it? I can't believe that those movies would require a firmware update. They've been out for too long.

I don't have an issue with captain america. I am having an issue with thor 2d version. its has trouble loading up and playing. I had this problem a while back with hellboy 2. it seems to have some sort of dvd rot.

My A Bug's Life and Monsters Inc won't play on my fat PS3.
Wait a minute, we were stuck in a blender and now we're saving lives? WHAT?!?

That's exactly what I said. It's the number of the entire system, but if you look on the actual player it will have its own model number.

I have no idea if my firmware is up to date. I know that the BDV-F7 has been out for a couple years so my player may have been manufactured a while ago. If it is my firmware, what do I do to update it? This is the first blu ray player I have ever owned so I am a newbie with that.

I do know this... if it's just a simple firmware update, then I think that's very sad on Sony's part. If the player has problems playing a blu ray disc (it is a blu ray player after all, right?) then it should at least give me a popup message that it detects a problem with the disc and that I need to update my firmware.

No, instead, it just freezes and hopes the user will figure something out! Brilliant.

Don't blame Sony, I don't think any BD player has a pop-up message notifying you to update your FW if a disc isn't playing.

Hi HD Goofnut. You could be correct. It may have it's own model number on the player unit, but I'm not sure that will provide any additional info. This particular player unit is exclusive to the BDV-F7. It is the only player Sony ever put out like this so it is only going to be known by the system model number. I can check later but I am not at home right now.

Take the discs to a friend's home or Best Buy and test them on different machines. If they play, then it's a compatibility issue with your hardware. If they don't play, then you were unlucky and ran into a bad batch of discs twice.

Well... then I would blame all blu ray player brands. That's crazy.

Bottom line... Sony should not allow anything to freeze the entire system. How can any information or lack thereof on any disc I put in that machine override the physical functionality of the machine controls? When you are sitting in front of a frozen system, you can't help but conclude that someone dropped the ball. Someone came up short. And since the Sony remote in my hand will not unfreeze the Sony player, I blame Sony! lol

Just read through that whole instruction page on how to update the firmware. Very interesting. I shall give it a try tonight!

Is the system connected to to the Internet? If so, disable any network connections and/or BD-Live functionality. Sometimes that can cause playback issues.

Well.. firmware was indeed out of date. Had version 610 and 787 was the newest.

So I went forward with the update. It took about 10 minutes and then powered off.

Powered it back up and popped in Super 8... flawless playback. Couldn't believe it. Captain America... same thing.

On one hand I am very happy. That was a relatively easy fix to an annoying frustration. On the other hand, I am still a bit perplexed at how I could have not known about it. I was almost ready to change out my whole system.

By the way, this particular system refers to it as a "network update", not a "firmware update". There has been a message that pops up every so often that said a network update was available. I always just ignored this because I don't care to use my player to connect to the internet and I thought that's what that was referring to. I just figured.. I only want to watch blu rays so I don't need any "network updates". That might sound stupid, but I'm not all that stupid, and that's what I figured, so obviously there's a missing link somewhere between the importance of these updates and the consumer.

Anyway.. thx guys. This simple thread helped me.
