Default Macon County Line (1974)

Richard Compton's MACON COUNTY LINE (1974) hits Blu January 16th, 2018, courtesy of Shout Select!

Quote:
The Drive-In Cult Classic comes to high definition!

Louisiana, 1954: Brothers Chris & Wayne Dixon (Alan Vint and Jesse Vint) are joyriding through the South before enlisting in the Army. When the wife of a local Sheriff is brutally killed by a pair of psychotic drifters, Chris and Wayne are mistaken for the murderers. Far from home, on the run and out of time, they find themselves hunted by the crazed lawman in a tragedy of rage and revenge that explodes in a shocking climax ... once they cross the Macon County Line.

Best known for playing goofy Jethro Bodine on The Beverly Hillbillies, Max Baer forever changed his image by producing, co-writing and co-starring in this powerful movie. With a strong supporting cast that includes Joan Blackman, Geoffrey Lewis, Cheryl Waters, James Gammon, Doodles Weaver and Leif Garrett, Macon County Line became the hit of 1974 as well as one of the most acclaimed drive-in classics of all time.

Cool little 70s drive-in flick.

Someone posted on FB that Warner own this, is that correct?

This was initially released by American International Pictures, but I imagine the rights to this and its sequel are controlled by Max Baer J.R and director Richard Compton (currently through his estate since his death in 2007). If that were the case, then it would explain them licencing the 1st film to Anchor Bay in 2000 (expired) and then Warner Home Video in '08, meaning the last of WB's rights have just expired with Shout now having them.

I like the sequel with Nick Nolte and Don Johnson better. Those guys can always ham it up and I love the Yellow Chevy.

This one is entertaining enough. I'll pick this one up when it comes out.

It's there with films like Walking Tall, Framed and Burt's 70's redneck action films.

Probably not quite as good as those though.

It hits a noticeable lull at one point... I love the song at the end with Bobbie Gentry though.

I could almost swear I have this on a Warner DVD. Or maybe it's another film with Macon County in the title.

Hopefully they can get the old AB extras and commentary.
Maybe a new interview with Max Baer Jr.

Quite by chance, I found out months ago this was forthcoming and am glad (and a bit disappointed) by the announcement. To explain:

A longtime collector of original movie posters (well before blu-rays, actually a few years before VHS!) who sells a few extras on eBay, I had a winner on this one:

In sending a thanks/ship email I thought I recognized a name from the biz and mentioned something like "in case you're the same person, thanks for years of great releases". It was and he indicated this would be possibly be used in an upcoming release. I kept the secret like a champ and eagerly awaited a good release of this sleeper hit I'd seen in a McComb, MS drive-in when new.

Thing is, you'll see that this is an elusive combo one sheet with the sequel. I didn't want to ask at the time and appear too pushy, but I began to think maybe both were coming. I had at least had decent oar DVDs of the original but the sequel has been missing since the VHS days. In seeing it again a couple of years ago, I imagine that it's the dreaded music rights since its full of pop hits of the day.

So after a few months of doubtful hoping, here we are. Glad to have this coming but still long for the sequel to see the light of blu day. And still excited that the one sheet ended up being used.
Some Most Wanted Blus: The Farmer, Shampoo, California Split, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Hud, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Semi-Tough, Hustle, Tom Horn, The Hunter, Black Sunday (77), Texasville (DC), The Keep, Rancho Deluxe, Klute, The Parallax View, The Day of the Locust, That's Life, Skin Deep, Sunset, A Wedding, Quintet, Fort Apache The Bronx, The Two Jakes, The Legend of Boggy Creek, Wishbone Cutter, White Hunter Black Heart, Straight Time, Ordinary People, Bugsy, Payday

Macon County Line turned out to be the single most profitable film of 1974 (in film cost to film gross ratio), making upwards of 30 million dollars at the box-office on less than a $200,000 investment.

Well, consider me surprised that there was another 1974 flick that outdid The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's astounding profit margin ($30 mil / $300K)!

Also, it sounds funny to call such a cult item as Macon County Line "the hit" of a year that also premiered such storied titles as Godfather II, Chinatown, The Towering Inferno, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Blazing Saddles, and Death Wish.
