Even though it's dead tech I couldn't help buying $4 and cheaper high def movies. I do have a stand-alone HD-DVD player but I would like to play these in my computer. I have a hubrid blu-ray/HD-DVD drive (LG GGW-H20L). I used to be able to play HD-DVDs with a version of PowerDVD but I don't remember which version it was and I no longer have the setup file for this program. Can someone let me know which version of PowerDVD can play HD-DVDs?
Someone in another forum said that Corel WinDVD 11 can play HD-DVD (he even said he has done it using his external xbox 360 drive) but I can't seem to figure out how to do that if it is even possible. Is there a setting I have to change to enable this? Thanks |

ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre is the only current software that will play HD DVDs.
http://www.arcsoft.com/totalmedia-theatre/ 7.3 was the last PowerDVD that could play them. They removed it from 8 onward.

Holy heck! $100?!
Is there a way to get PowerDVD 7.3 from anywhere? I'm kind of surprised that there hasn't been some sort of open-source software for HD-DVD yet since it died out. Is there some sort of licensing that people need to make a program that plays it? |

If you have the space you could rip them to MKV with MakeMKV and play them that way..Wouldn't cost you anything.

MakeMKV is a good solution but won't rip all disks, I ran into a couple when ripping my collection recently.
* Sub: SVS PC12-NSD * L/C/R: Axiom M22's * Surrounds: B&W DS6 * Pre/Pro: Integra DHC-80.2 * AMP: Emotiva XPA5 *
* Projector: JVC X30 * Screen: Seymour AV Center Stage DIY * Blu Ray: PS3 * Control System: Crestron QM-RMC * Remote: iPad * |

The other solution is to sell the HD-DVD titles on EBAY and then re-purchase those titles on Blu-ray. If there have been some HD-DVD titles that have never been released on Blu-ray then you could keep those titles until they are released on Blu-ray (some titles might never see a Blu-ray release).

Can't it be plugged in via the USB ports on the rear of the computer? I had an XBOX 360 HD DVD add-on player which is borked. Wondering if it's a good idea to get another. Especially since I do have quite a few HD DVDs which are still not on Blu-ray. Even rip them to my computer, reformat/convert with the menus to Blu-ray. Of course I'd drop all dubbing. Maybe even rip Apollo 13 HD DVD with the better image quality, keeps the film grain, drop all dubs and main audio, then have the DTS-HD Master Audio from the Blu-ray with it. Custom Blu-ray to put with the Blu-ray release. This would be best for titles not even on our winning format.
