Not so fast. I just received the rental version of Escape Plan, and it unfortunately contains a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track

Looks like they're back at it unfortunately.

A friend of mine rented this from Redbox. I rented mine from Netflix. We both got the same disc, a movie-only copy with DD 5.1 track only.

I wonder why they keep flip flopping on this. All of Lionsgate's 2013 rental releases included lossless audio. Now, all of a sudden in 2014 they've gone back to it. Makes no logical sense.

No, but this makes zero business sense as well: Lossless, lossy, lossless, and now back to lossy.

what's the purpose of this, to make people want to not rent the movie? are they saying they save money not putting the lossless audio track or extras on the disc?

i'll gather the rental places either don't get enough complaints from customers or is it that the studios simply do whatever they want to in this situation and again, why screw the customer over.

or is it that they have somehow determined that people with good audio setups prefer to buy rather than rent or something? i just don't understand the point of it.

was there ever a statement released by lionsgate (and whoever else might be doing it) as to the "why" of it?

All you have to do is buy 1 share of stock, and you'll get all the company info you want.

You don't seem to be following me. Why would they flip flip back and forth for the fourth time? That is my question.

Are the rental movie-only editions with lossy audio on single layer BD-25's instead of dual layer disc? Maybe that's why they're doing it; slightly cheaper media for rentals. Just a thought.

I'm sure that's a factor, but why the flip flopping? It's like they've fired 3 people and hired a 4th to determine how to handle this.

All well & good, but I'm quite sure a stockholder would know the answer to this, which was my point. Especially if LG is doing it as a cost saving measure.

well, i didn't state that they were obligated or not, i'm just wondering if any word about why this was occuring was released. kinda like VUDU putting out the word that they are switching up to DD+ for their streaming movies to give you better audio quality.

just wondering if they said anything.

but, i am seeing from some of these posts that we are starting to go somewhere else and before this turns into a big ol fight fest, let's all take a breath, meet up in Denver, smoke one and mellow out!

i'm bringing the Doritos!

You go buy a share, thusly becoming a stockholder. Anyone can do this. I'm not talking about exisiting stockholders.

If you want inside info, go buy 1 share, and then receive your inside info...which would include why they are flip-flopping audio specs on rental copies.

Why go in person, when stocks can be bought with the click of a button?

As a stockholder you will be getting info on company dealings, business strategies, costs, expenditures, etc....I'm sure you know all this.
Also you will have various points of contact inside the company, and if you really wanted to know what LG plans were for flip-flopping audio specs on rental copies, I'm quite certain you'll get the answer. I don't think it's some big corporate secret that will shock the world.
You'll also be partial owner of the company.

I watched All Is Lost yesterday from Netflix and I wanted to confirm that it does indeed have the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track. Lionsgate just can't make up their mind it seems.

Lossless for odd years, lossy for even years. Seems like a pretty basic pattern of WTF.
Worse than that, my library was getting nothing but retail discs from all studios most of the last 2 years. Now it's mostly rental copies again, at least Warner and Lionsgate have all been rental versions.

It looks like HG;CF will have lossy DD 5.1 from Netflix & Redbox. On the Netflix page a couple weeks back, they claimed it would have DTS-HD MA 7.1 but they changed it to DD 5.1.

As a data point, Hunger Games: Catching Fire also has DD 5.1 from Redbox.
