As StingingVelvet said, the ball is there. You don't even notice it missing unless you probably pause it to the right frame.
Just because you didn't notice something that is supposed to be visible is missing from some frames in the movie doesn't mean it's not a huge problem. It's supposed to be visible. That is proof positive that this transfer has something wrong with it, whether you think it's good or not.

But a ball missing from a single frame that your eyes can't even pick up is not a problem.

True, but the fact that it's missing at all regardless of how insignificant it appears in isolation, is just proof that in the grand scheme of things the amount of DNR applied to the transfer on BD is too much.

Indeed.

Again, the truth is in the middle. It had too much DNR applied for sure, but it's not some horrible mess to look at either. I'm not going to hook up an HD-DVD player in 2014, and it's a lot better looking than a DVD or download. It is what it is.

If you have an Xbox 360, the attachment HD-DVD player for it costs like 75 cents these days. And it's about three times as narrow as an ordinary stand alone player so it doesn't take up much space.

I bought one pretty much exclusively for The Thing after I've seen those caps-a-holic comparisons. And for Midnight Run. There are also other Universal titles that are clearly superior on HD-DVD, for whatever reason. Perhaps most notably Apollo 13:

I've also learned that the HD-DVD version of Casino is slightly superior the the blu ray version. And let's not forget the juggernaut releases from Magnolia Pictures that everyone owns, such as Steven Soderbergh's masterpiece Bubble, which is a MPEG2 transfer on a BD25, but an AVC on a HD-DVD30.

I am pretty sure that there are several Paramount releases that are superior on HD-DVD, I hope that caps-a-holic provides the comparisons eventually.
